Women's Basketball Awards Banquet Celebrates Accomplishments Of 2006-07 Season

The 2nd Annual Women’s Basketball Awards Banquet was held this past Saturday to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2006-2007 season. The evening began with a Varsity O Letter Winners presentation by Dr. Robert Poole, Varsity O President and Brina Chaney, Varsity O women’s basketball representative. Each athlete was awarded with their letters for competing during the 2006-2007 season.

Nash, from Stayton, OR, battled injuries throughout the season but reached double figures in scoring in 27 of 28 games, led the Beavers in scoring 23 times and scored 20+ points on a Pac-10 leading 15 occasions. She was also presented with her career 1,000th point basketball and is just one of six players in school history to score 1,000 points (1,163) and pull down 650 rebounds (679).
Sophomore guard received two awards on the night. Fox-Griffin earned the Free Throw Award after leading the Beavers with a .798 (95-for119) clip from the charity stripe, which ranks in the Top 10 of the Pacific-10 Conference this season.
Fox-Griffin was also awarded the Most Improved Player Award. The La Jolla, CA native went from averaging 11.9 minutes per game and 1 point per game as a backup point guard her freshman year, to averaging 38.2 minutes per game and 6.43 assists per game her sophomore year. She ranked 1st in the Pac-10 in both minutes per game and assists per game and finished the season ranked 8th in the country in assists per game.
The Academic Excellence Award was given to freshman for her exemplary work in the classroom. She is an Exercise and Sport Sciences major and excels in her classes amidst a demanding Pac-10 season.
The awards portion of the evening concluded with the Carol Menken-Schaudt Leadership Award. This prestigious award is given to the women’s basketball athlete that possesses the qualities of leadership, character and integrity.
