Women's Golf at Stanford This Weekend
CORVALLIS — With the postseason rapidly approaching, the Oregon State women’s golf team hopes to make another successful push toward an NCAA berth with a strong finish at the upcoming Peg Barnard Invitational, hosted by Stanford. It’a a 36-hole event with one round being played on Friday and Saturday (April 6-7).
The Peg Barnard Invitational is being held at the par-71, 6,030-yard Stanford Golf Course.
OSU is one of 13 teams participating. With Golfstat rankings noted, the field consists of #13 Stanford, #19 Denver, #28 San Jose State, #35 San Francisco, #42 Hawaii, #46 Washington State, #54 UC Davis, #62 Fresno State, #65 Long Beach State, #67 Oregon State, #116 Eastern Washington, #123 Santa Clara and #129 Portland State.
The OSU lineup will feature the same five players for the fifth consecutive tournament. The players are junior (Bellingham, Wash./Bellingham HS), junior (Battle Ground, Wash./Battle Ground HS), junior (Modesto, Calif./Modesto HS), sophomore (Alameda, Calif./Bishop O’Dowd HS) and freshman (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS).
"We’re glad to have the opportunity to play this week and this event worked well with our schedule," OSU Coach said. "If we want to make it to regionals we need to play some of these teams and beat them. Spring counts a little more heavily than fall, and we’ve been playing better in the spring. Last week we beat Washington and California when we had the opportunity, and this week we have the opportunity to beat some other schools. If we can get the job done, that will help us, and then it’ll be up to the committee."
After this weekend, the last chance the Beavers have to impress is the Pac-10 Championships, hosted by Washington, on April 23-25.
The Beavers took part in two events last week. The Beavers finished a very strong third at the Duck Invitational on March 26-27, then was 13th at the Ping/ASU Invitational in Tempe on March 30-April 1. Gebhardt tied for sixth place at the Duck Invitational, followed by Uhrik (tied for 10th) and Burkard (tied for 13th). Gebhardt again led the Beavers at ASU, tying for 35th.
Among the regulars, Gebhardt leads the team in scoring average (76.12), followed by Ferrante (76.77) and Uhrik (77.69).
"Jessi has obviously been playing very well lately and can play even better," Lakowske said. "All of them have had some good rounds lately. Julianna and Jillian played pretty well last time out with the exception of a few holes. Everyone just needs to get into a better frame of mind and particular points in their rounds."
