Mandi Rodriguez Finishes Fifth in Vault Finals - Oregon State University Athletics

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Oregon State freshman held the lead in the individual vault finals at the halfway point and finished fifth overall at the NCAA Championships, Saturday evening. Sophomore scored one of the highest vault scores of the evening on her first vault before ending 11th overall.

Rodriguez performed second out of 15 competitors and needed her combined score of 9.8375 to hold up through 13 competitors. Throughout the first flight, Rodriguez’s lead held firm with the final competitor in her group, Savannah Evans from Florida, coming the closest to unseating her with a score of 9.8125. But the first vaulter, Courtney Kupets of Georgia, of the second flight overtook Rodriguez and eventually held on for the national title.

Smith stuck her Yurchenko full scoring the third-highest vault score of the evening with a 9.9125 on her first attempt. For her second vault, Smith, who had not practiced her second vault (Yurchenko with 1½ twists) onto a hard surface this season, and coaches Tanya and decided to go for a national title. She fought to stick the landing but couldn’t keep her balance and fell to finish 11th overall.
