On Friday, the Beavers outlasted the Cardinal in a 4-hour, 4-minute contest that saw neither starting pitcher OSU’s Mike Stutes and Stanford’s Jeremy Bleich - make it out of the fifth inning. OSU took advantage of nine walks and three Stanford errors to win for the 10th time in its last 12 games.
Reliever Blake Keitzman was credited with the win for OSU; his first collegiate decision came as he pitched two innings and allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out one. Eddie Kunz earned his eight save, getting the final four outs.
Jordan Lennerton then drove a fly to right-centerfield that one-hopped the fence for a three-run double, putting OSU up 8-4. With two out, Lonnie Lechelt tapped a ball toward the mound; Stanford reliever Brandt Walker’s throw was dropped by first baseman Jason Castro and Lennerton headed for the plate, just evading the tag of catcher Brian Juhl to score and make it 9-4.
It was the second straight game in which Lennerton had delivered a three-run double. He had one in OSU’s eight-run seventh inning at
Stanford came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth against Stutes and Keitzman. Michael Taylor and Joey August delivered back-to-back one-out singles, then Stutes walked Sorgi to load the bases. Enter Keitzman, who induced a groundball from Juhl but it snuck through the right side for a two-run single to pull the Cardinal within 9-6. Keitzman picked up a strikeout and a flyout to end the inning without further damange.
The Cardinal cut the gap to 9-7 when pinch hitter Ryan Seawell drew a leadoff walk and scored on Cord Phelps’ single through the right side. OSU got the run back as Joey Wong drew a leadoff walk in the top of the eighth inning and Darwin Barney singled him home with two out to make it 10-7.
Stanford had tied the game with a trio of two-out runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Castro shot a run-scoring single up the middle and Adam Gaylord ripped a two-run double down the leftfield line.
