No. 18 Men's Rowing Hang Tough With No. 4 Stanford - Oregon State University Athletics

LOWELL, Ore. – On Saturday (Apr 28) at Dexter Lake, the No. 18 Oregon State men’s rowing team put together three solid races against No. 4 ranked Stanford, but was unable to come away with a victory.

Starting things off with the first race of the morning were the Junior Varsity 8+ boats. Both Stanford and Oregon State put forth outstanding efforts as they battled down the 2,000 meter course. In the final 500 meters Stanford was able to pull out the victory by a two-second margin.

“The two JV boats matched up pretty well against one another and had a very good race,” said head coach Steve Todd. “Those two could have a really good fight at Pac-10s in a couple weeks.”

The Varsity 8+ was the next race on the schedule. Both teams got out to a good start and were fighting for position through the first 1,000 meters. Just past the halfway point the Cardinal got an edge on OSU and would go on for the victory with a margin just over five seconds.

“We made some changes that helped the varsity crew improve their boat speed against a really good Stanford crew,” said Todd. “It was great to get the Stanford guys up here to have something of a home race and allow a lot of people to come out and watch the sport.”

Finishing out the morning in the Novice 8+ was Stanford earning a victory over the Beavers.

Oregon State’s No. 19 ranked women’s rowing team was also in competition against No. 17 Stanford and Washington State at Dexter Lake and won the Winchell Cup and Tammy Crawford Plate from Washington State.

Men’s rowing will be back in competition next weekend (May 5) for the Windermere Cup Opening Day Regatta in Seattle, Wash. hosted by the University of Washington.
