No. 19 Women's Rowing Capture Winchell Cup and Tammy Crawford Plate

LOWELL, Ore. – The No. 19 Oregon State women’s rowing team captured the Winchell Cup and the Tammy Crawford Plate from Washington State Saturday (Apr. 28) at Dexter Lake. No. 17 ranked Stanford was also in competition this weekend against OSU and WSU.

Getting things started well for the Beavers was the Novice 8+ garnering a five second victory over the Cougars in a race that was very close through the first 1,000 meters of the race with OSU gradually gaining their lead through the second half of the race.

Next on schedule was the Varsity 4+ where Stanford took the top spot followed by WSU in second and then OSU’s 'A' and 'B' boats taking third and fourth place.

In the Second Varsity 8+ the Beavers came back strong with another victory. The Beavers finished four seconds faster that WSU and more than five seconds ahead of Stanford after falling behind in the first 500 meters.

“The 2V did a great job today,” said head coach Emily Ford. “They got down quite a bit in the first 500 and stayed really composed and started working back on the field. Everybody could see from the shore at 1,000 meters it was neck and neck and we pulled away from there. Once they got it going they didn’t look back. I was very proud of them today.”

Following the 2V8+ was the Varsity 8+ race. Here again the Beavers got down early in the race and were able to move up past Washington State but were unable to catch a very strong Stanford varsity crew that would go on to win the race.

“The varsity had a very nice race today even though we didn’t get the win,” said Ford. “Our results are moving in the right direction. We are getting faster as the season is going, and that is what is important.”

Finishing the day for OSU was the Second Novice 8+ earning a victory over WSU by five seconds.

“The momentum on the team is good. It’s very important to go into Pac-10s feeling like you have some momentum behind you,” said Ford.

The Winchell Cup is a competition between OSU and WSU. The cup is awarded to the crew with most points tallied from the V8+, 2V8+, V4+ and N8+ races. The Tammy Crawford Plate is awarded to the top varsity boat between the two.

Oregon State’s No. 18 ranked men’s rowing team was also in competition at Dexter Lake against No. 4 Stanford.
