OSU’s Caleb Hawley had a chance to sit down with Storm as this week’s Everyday Champion, in partnership with Target.
You were born and raised in
“Good recruiting was one of the reasons. Not to mention one of the girls I knew from back home played here (). That kind of got me to come out here. She and I played really well at the back together and she’s also just a great person.”
You are majoring in exercise and sports science and have a minor in public health. What got you interested in those fields?
“Originally when I came here I wanted to be an athletic trainer, but you soon come to find out that you can’t do that and play a sport at the same time. So the next closest thing was to stick in the EXSS major and learn about health aspects of what I do everyday and how to treat my body. Now I’m on track to become a massage therapist, graduate and go to massage therapy school.”
How difficult is it to be a student-athlete? How do you manage your time?
“One of the things I learned was that you have to learn to like the things you might not want to do. One of my teachers really stressed that to us. That’s one of the things I’m still learning. I also try to schedule so I don’t have a lot of short breaks in between my schedule. That way I can just have a solid day and have time for meals. I think as long as I eat right, then I’ll be energized throughout the day to do everything that I need to do.”
What extra-curricular activities have you or are now involved in?
“I’m currently been involved in SAAC. I have been for awhile now. I just went to the Pac-10 SAAC forum this past weekend.”
You were quite involved in “The Other Side”, the student-athlete talent show that raised $1,700 for
“It went really well. We raised a lot of money for a really great cause. It was actually a memorial fund for
How did you get started in soccer, how old were you and who were your early influences?
“I started playing soccer when I was four and a half. I haven’t stopped since then. It was really my parents who put me into sports, but the person that inspired me when I was young was my brother. He is two years older than me. You always want to be like your older sibling.”
How is spring practice going?
“Practices are going really well. It’s a lot of fun and really demanding at times. We are pushing ourselves to become a better team. Our coaches are really pushing us to become better players and are challenging us mentally to help us realize that as soon as we feel like we can’t go any further, we can go beyond what we think we can go. I think it’s really helped us come together as a team to pull each other up when we feel like we can’t go any farther. We’re definitely coming together and I think it’s going to be great considering we have our first game on Friday.”
What do you like doing when you actually get some time to yourself in your busy schedule?
“I like to sleep and I’m a movie watcher, even though I can’t remember any of the movies that I ever watch. I like to hang out with my roommates who are my teammates. It’s sounds kind of weird because I see them so much, but outside the field is way different than on the field. I like to eat too. I like to go out, especially Japanese food; it’s kind of my favorite. You can’t really make that at home.”
What do you enjoy most about being part of the OSU soccer team?
“Just playing with my teammates everyday. Being able to work with the people I do and play with the people I do are the best things possible. They are all great people and you learn so much about yourself through them and you learn so much about them as people.”
What are your post-OSU plans once you get your degree and finish your soccer career?
“Well, anywhere from a year to two years I will be at massage therapy school, depending on how quick I can get it done. My ultimate goal is to become a sports masseuse, either at a really solid college program or all of the college teams. Maybe a professional team if I can get in. Either that or open up my own clinic and maybe coach some soccer if I can learn some patience.”
