No. 19 Men's Rowing Claim Two More Wins - Oregon State University Athletics

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – To close out the Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic, the No. 19 ranked-Oregon State men’s rowing team finished strong with two victories in the Stanford hosted event. The Varsity 8+ defeated Gonzaga by nearly four seconds and the Junior Varsity 8+ defeated Loyola Marymount by 15 and a half seconds at Redwood Shores.

The V8+ rowed first for the Beavers in the morning against a very solid Gonzaga crew that had received votes for the top 20 national rankings. Through the first 500 meters OSU got out to a two second lead. By the half-way point the Beavers had built up a four second lead. Through the third 500 meters Gonzaga made a strong move to overtake the Beavers, but OSU held them off and would go on for the win by nearly four seconds. The times for the race were OSU at 6:11.80 and Gonzaga at 6:15.64.

In Oregon State’s second race, the JV8+ took care of Loyola Marymount pretty handily. Through the first 500 meters Loyola battled OSU neck and neck, but by the second 500 meters OSU had burst out to a four second lead. Through the third 500 meter OSU had extended their lead to nine seconds and then finished out the race in victory with a 15 and a half second lead.

Both the V8+ and JV8+ finished the Classic with a record of 2-1.

“The races this weekend were definitely a step in the right direction for us,” said head coach Steve Todd. “We learned a lot about racing this weekend and we got to compare ourselves against some strong competition. The next couple of weeks are going to be tough going against two very strong opponents in Washington and Stanford. I really expect these three races in two days will help get us ready for them.”

Oregon State men’s rowing will be back in action next weekend Apr. 21 in Seattle, Wash. for a regatta hosted by the University of Washington.
