No. 17 Women's Rowing Take 6 of 8 at Big Ten Duals - Oregon State University Athletics

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 17-ranked Oregon State women’s rowing team came away from the Big Ten Double Duals hosted by the University of Minnesota with six victories out of eight races against Big Ten crews No. 18 Wisconsin and Iowa at Lake Phalen on Saturday Apr. 14. The Beavers had four boats competing in the regatta with the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Novice 8+ and Varsity 4+.

In the morning session the N8+ got things started for the Beavers (6:47.94) but came up just shy of Wisconsin (6:47.29) by less than a second. Following the N8+ was the V4+ who also came up short against Wisconsin, and again by less than a second (Wisc-7:44.71; OSU- 7:45.27).

But the Beavers were not to be denied the rest of the day. The V8+ and the 2V8+ picked up the pace in the morning session with each defeating the Badgers. The V8+ won by an impressive six and a half seconds (OSU- 6:36.28; Wisc- 6:42.58) and the 2V8+ won by nearly five seconds (OSU- 6:49.03; Wisc- 6:42.58).

“Anytime you get a win over a well respected V8+ opponent like Wisconsin it’s going to help your confidence, but more importantly the rowers felt like they put together a solid race. That does more for a team than anything,” said head coach Emily Ford.

With apparent momentum from the latter part of the morning session all four boats took care of business in the afternoon session and won their respective dual races against Iowa in impressive fashion. The V8+ won by more than eight seconds (OSU- 6:41.30; Iowa-7:02.28), the 2V8+ won by 12 and a half seconds (OSU-6:49.70; Iowa- 7:02.28), V4+ won by more than 18 seconds (OSU-7:40.27; Iowa-7:58.87) and the N8+ won by nearly five and a half seconds (OSU-7:00.43; Iowa-7:05.68).

“Today’s races were another good step for us as a team. I respect the competition of the Big Ten. It’s good to see that we match-up pretty well against them. Every boat had at least one very solid race for us and two pretty good races on the day.”

Oregon State women’s rowing will be back in competition next weekend, Apr. 21 in Seattle, Wash. for a regatta hosted by the University of Washington.
