Defense Strong in Opening Scrimmage

Corvallis -- As is usually the case, the defense dominated the first scrimmage of spring football practice Saturday on a blustery day at Reser Stadium. The offense generated just two scores in the 93-play drill that featured many first unit or key reserves on the sidelines.
“It certainly looked like the defense dominated and I’m not concerned about that right now,” head coach said. “I was actually pretty pleased with the offense for only our eighth practice of the year. We ran the ball pretty consistently today, but we didn’t throw the ball well to establish much there.”
Gunderson took a collection of second and third team players on an 11-play 70-yard drive that culminated with a 31-yard pass to receiver for the only touchdown pass. Sim guided the team to the second and final touchdown of the day with a nine-play 70-yard drive that ended in a 2-yard run by . The score was set up by a 46-yard reception by receiver .
Linebackers and each made an interception of Canfield to hinder the Beaver passing game. Backup safety had the other interception of the day, picking off a stray Gunderson pass.
Numerous Beavers did not play due to injuries or a decision by the coaches, including starters (RB), (WR), (DE) and (OG). Others out of today’s action included (RB), (CB), (WR), (WR), (TE) and (LB).
“Our third-teamers actually got more work than anybody today and that was really the purpose of the scrimmage,” Riley said. “The younger and newer guys got a chance to finish plays; they don’t have a chance to do that during regular practices.
Practice resumes Monday at 3 p.m. with the second scrimmage scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sat., April 21.
