No. 19 Men's Rowing Racing at Windermere Classic - Oregon State University Athletics

CORVALLIS – The No. 19 Oregon State men’s rowing team is heading back to California for the second time in two weeks for the Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic this weekend in Redwood City, Calif. at Redwood Shores. Racing begins Saturday morning Apr. 14 and goes through Sunday, Apr. 15.

Oregon State top two boats will compete at the Windermere Classic this weekend, the Varsity 8+ and Junior Varsity 8+.

Other competitors at this weekend's regatta includes No. 1 Washington, No 2. Stanford University, No. 4 California, No. 7 Princeton, No. 8 Wisconsin, No. 11 Trinity College No. 20 George Washington, Notre Dame, Central Florida, Loyola, Louisville, Tennessee, Virginia, UCLA, Washington State, Gonzaga, Santa Clara, Sonoma State and UC Davis.

“We are really trying to improve our own speed from our San Diego race,” said head coach Steve Todd. “I think that we’ve made progress in the past week and over the next couple of days we'll try take another step and be a little bit more prepared for Trinity, George Washington and Gonzaga.”

“Having raced at San Diego helped to prepare us for this weekend's race and the next two weeks when we'll have five races against teams that are very strong including races against a couple of the best crews in the country. So we have to use all of our experiences to prepare for the Pac-10 schools we'll face as the season goes on.”

The regatta will draw a total number of rowers that nearly reaches 1,000. In two days of competition, each team will compete in Henley style racing, a one-on-one or a two-boat race used for competition at the famous Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England on the 2000 meter course.

GETTING TO KNOW JAMES FULMER

Q. You transferred to Oregon State from Rutgers, what made you transfer to the
West Coast?

A. Rutgers University has decided to change their crew team from varsity status
to a club sport. I was also looking for a team that is consistently in the top
10 annually.

Q. What have you enjoyed most about Oregon State rowing?

A. The collective drive and determination of the team here at OSU surpasses
anything that I've ever encountered, whether it be high school or college sports.

Q. Do you ever miss New Jersey?

A. No. New Jersey has been my home, but I quickly realized that New Jersey had
nothing more to offer, and Oregon has truly been one of the most beautiful
places I've ever been.

Q. How long have you been rowing?

A. Six years total. I rowed three at St. Augustine College Preparatory School for Boys
(high school), two at Rutgers University and one here at OSU.

Q. What got you started in rowing?

A. In high school I did football, wrestling, and baseball my first year, but
sophomore year I realized that I wanted something to keep me in better shape in
the spring. I tried crew and found out that it was the best sport for that. I
wound up rowing year-round in my last two years of high school, which led to me
being recruited to a number of top college programs.

Q. What are your goals for this season?

A. My goals are goals for the team. I know that we are capable of qualifying for
the Grand Final (top 6) at IRA's (Nationals). It’s just not very easy to do.
