No. 17 Women's Rowing Racing at Big Ten Duals

At 9:45 a.m. N8+ gets things started for OSU. Following the N8+ will be the V4+ at 10:30, the 2V8+ at 11:00 and then the V8+ at 11:30 to round out the morning session. The Beavers take on the Badgers in each of the morning races.
All of the afternoon races come against
“I am excited to be a part of this event,” said head coach Emily Ford. “We are a guest team for the Big Ten. It’s nice to be included in that. The Big Ten is a great conference to be racing in and it will definitely help us further gauge our speed to this point in the season.”
GETTING TO KNOW CAROLINE LEIBINGER
What does it mean to you to be recognized nationally as an All-American, and receive the various other awards such as being recognized by your team as Outstanding Oarswoman, the Pac-10 awards and the regional awards?
”It was a great honor to be chosen as an All-American. Coming from
the gym and even in the classroom pays off. The whole team had a great year
last year, we made lots of improvements and I couldn't have received all those
awards without my teammates, because they are the ones who keep me going and who push me every day to work hard! So really it was also an award to them!”
With all of your accomplishments do you see yourself as a roll-model for your teammates?
”I'm a senior this year on the team which automatically puts me in a position
where I have to show leadership and be a roll-model for the girls. I would say,
that I'm more of a quiet leader. I'm more a roll-model by example. I'm trying to
work hard, and hopefully my work ethic comes through to the girls so they get
motivated to work hard as well.”
What have you had to do to get yourself to the level of rowing that you are at?
”Well, it takes lots and lots of training. In my opinion to be a good rower you
don't need to have a lot of talent. All you need is determination in your work
ethic and a positive mind set that makes you go beyond the pain! Really, it's
your own effort, and how much work you want to put in it to achieve something
great! I also had to learn to relax sometimes and just go for it!”
How has
”
training here really emphasizes strength, which I was lacking when I first came here three years ago. Secondly, I became mentally more stable and I learned how to really push myself through the pain. Charlie Owen, the former coach, really helped me with that and it has been a lot of fun working hard and getting good results.”
What have you enjoyed most about competing for OSU?
I have always enjoyed the
schools, and it's always fun to go up there and race them on their lake! I also
enjoyed the Windermere Crew Classics at
is just an amazing opportunity to race other really good schools and have a nice
atmosphere! But really it is the team and the team atmosphere that makes the
training and the racing so enjoyable. I love the girls, working so hard with
them and then racing with them. You really learn how to trust them and how to
achieve something you have never achieved before.
