SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Crew Classic has come to conclusion as the No. 19 ranked Oregon State men’s rowing team placed each of their boats in the Grand Finals at Classic Crown Point Shores Park on Mission Bay. The Varsity 8+ finished third, the Novice 8+ finished in sixth place and the Junior Varsity 8+ captured second place.
California had a runaway victory in the JV8+ Sharp Cabrillo Cup Grand Final. Taking a look behind Cal, a fantastic race was brewing. Oregon State, Notre Dame and UC Davis were all jockeying for the second place spot. OSU fended off the charging Notre Dame and UC Davis crews en route to a second place finish. Notre Dame came in third, followed by UC Davis, UC San Diego and UC Irvine.
Two of the nation’s top 10 ranked opponents were featured in the V8+ Grand Final of the Copley Cup. No. 8 ranked Stanford out-battled No. 2 ranked California for the upset in a very tight race where the top two were separated by less than a second for almost the entire race. Oregon State and Purdue battled it out for third and fourth place down the 2000m race course with OSU taking the edge over the Boilermakers by two seconds.
Through the first 1000m of the race, the OSU N8+ was threatening for a top three finish before a strong field of West Coast opponents made strong moves to finish ahead of the Beavers. Winning the race easily was California. The rest of the field was very close with Orange Coast College coming in at second place followed by Northeastern, Stanford, UC Davis and Oregon State respectively in the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup.
Oregon State men’s rowing will hit the water in competition again on Apr. 14-15 at Redwood Shores, Calif. for the Windermere Collegiate Classic.
