Women's Rowing Qualify All Boats to Grand Final - Oregon State University Athletics

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon State women’s rowing team had a very good outing in qualifying round of the San Diego Crew Classic. All three boats (Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, and Novice 8+) qualified for their respective Grand Final at Classic Crown Point Shores Park on Mission Bay.

In the N8+ heat Oregon State (7:23.64) torched the competition. The Beaver’s nearest competition, Washington State (7:34.07), was back by more than 10 seconds. OSU got out to a slight edge through the first 500 meters and kept pushing to a larger and larger lead through the last three quarters of the course.

A close second lace finish was the case for the OSU 2V8+, finishing just two seconds behind conference foe USC (6:50.17). OSU (6:52.16) was in third place through nearly three quarters of the entire race, but a hard push in the final 500 meters to sneak past another conference opponent, California (6:55.01) for second place.

The OSU V8+ (6:43.66) finished a very competitive Jessop-Whittier heat race in third place behind No. 8 USC (6:37.36) and less than two seconds behind No. 14 UCLA (6:42.03). In the race the Beavers defeated No. 12 ranked Clemson (6:49.43) by nearly six seconds.

“Each of our three boats had solid races,” said head coach Emily Ford. “There is some room for improvement in some places, but the races today were a good step for us going into tomorrow’s races. I was pleased with the way the team approached their races and the way they handled themselves.”

Oregon State will begin their Grand Final races tomorrow morning starting with the N8+ at 9:45, followed by the 2V8+ at 10:40 and then the all Pac-10 V8+ Grand Final at 11:35. The races can be viewed free on a live video web-cast at .

The Oregon State men’s rowing team also qualified all three boats into their Grand Finals that will begin tomorrow morning at 10.
