CORVALLIS, Ore. The Oregon State men’s golf program added its fourth recruit for 2006-07 as Diego Velasquez, a native of Colombia, has signed a letter-of-intent, head coach Brian Watts announced today.
Velasquez (Bogota, Colombia/Gimnasio Los Caobos) has done very well competing against older golfers on the amateur circuit, and has ranked as high as #2 in the country among Colombia’s amateurs. He has played twice at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships, including a tie for 38th in 2005.
“Diego is very enthusiastic and passionate about his golf game,” Watts said. “He has improved his play greatly the past couple of years. He comes in with a lot of experience, and I would expect him to make an immediate impact on the program. I feel fortunate to have signed him knowing that he was highly recruited by others. He’s very intelligent on the course and plays aggressively. He’s not afraid of making a mistake.”
A Colombian native, Velasquez has also lived in England and in Texas for two years, as he spent his freshman and sophomore years at Granbury (Texas) High School.
The Beavers previously signed James Allenby (Langley, B.C./Langley Secondary School/UTEP), who will be a junior, and incoming freshmen Scott Barton (Bend, Ore./Sisters HS) and Paul Peterson (Salem, Ore./Sprague HS) for 2006-07.
