Men's Golf Names Team Awards

CORVALLIS -- Sophomore Vincent Johnson was named MVP of the Oregon State men's golf team for the 2005-06 season at the team's recent awards banquet.
Johnson (Portland, Ore./David Douglas HS) had a team-best 73.88 stroke average. He won the season-opening Northwest College Classic with a school and tournament-record 14-under par 202. He also finished in a tie for eighth at the Wolverine Intercollegiate, and a tie for 14th at the Hawaii-Hilo Intercollegiate. He had eight rounds under 70.
Junior Mitch Gillis (Williams Lake, B.C.) was named the Most Improved Player. After playing in one of only four fall tournaments, he was a fixture in the lineup in the spring. He tied for fifth at the Oregon Duck Invitational and had OSU's best finish at the Pac-10 Championships.
Freshman Alex Williams (Vancouver, Wash.) was named Best Newcomer. He had a 75.43 stroke average, third-best on the team, and played in 10 of 11 events.
