No. 8 OSU Drops CWS Opener To Miami

“We are somewhat disappointed as a club,” OSU head coach Pat Casey said. “We didn’t play as well as we hoped.
“The nice thing is that this tournament is double-elimination. Next time out, I hope we play ball like we are capable.”
On Saturday, OSU junior righthander Dallas Buck saw his record drop to 12-3 on the season, allowing a season-high seven runs in five innings. He allowed four walks all of which eventually scored while striking out two and hitting one.
“This is probably the worst game I’ve ever pitched,” Buck said. “Sure a bad time for it.”
Gillespie did extend his hitting streak to 17 games when he lined a single to center in the fourth inning; that matches Darwin Barney for the longest streak of the season by a Beaver. When Gillespie tripled to score Chris Kunda from first base with one out in the eighth inning, it kept OSU from being shut out for the first time since the middle of the 2003 season a string now at 186 straight games.
“He really got ahead of our batters,” Gillespie said of
In the top of the second, the Hurricanes tacked on three more runs for a 5-0 lead. Buck walked the bases loaded with one out, then Tommy Giles doubled to left-center to drive in all three runners. OSU third baseman Shea McFeely saved another run when he made a diving stop of
The game was delayed twice by rain for four minutes in the middle of the fifth inning by a passing shower, then for 1 hour, 34 minutes at the end of the seventh inning due to heavy rain and lightning. The crowd of 25,417 was the 13th-largest for a single session in CWS history and was the largest ever to see an OSU baseball game.
Bill Rowe added a triple with two out in the ninth inning for the Beavers, giving OSU 29 triples on the season for a new school record, besting the 27 hit by the 2002 team.
