CORVALLIS, Ore. Five high school seniors have committed to join the
Oregon State women’s crew, announced head coach , Friday.
Neta Fischer (Everett, Wash./Henry M. Jackson HS/Everett Rowing Association), Jenny Kossowsky (Liepsig, Germany), Brittany McMenamin (Portland, Ore./St. Mary’s HS/Rose City Rowing Club), Rebecca Powell (Snohomish, Wash./Snohomish HS/Everett Rowing Association) and Patricia Stackpole (Snohomish, Wash./Lake Stevens Rowing Club) will join the Beavers in the fall.
“This is the strongest recruiting class Oregon State has had in years,” Owen said. “Neta, Brittany, Becky and Tricia are coming from some of the best clubs in the region, so we know their rowing skills are solid. Neta, Brittany, and Becky are all in their second year of rowing and already performing at a high level and that gives me confidence in their potential to go even faster here at OSU. Tricia has been rowing three years, and she’s an accomplished sculler, which translates to great boat feel in the bigger boats. Jenny has several years of rowing experience with her club in Germany and she’s had success at the international level. This group is going to make an immediate impact.”
Fischer and McMenamin are each in the 1st Varsity 8 of their respective clubs. Fischer recently earned a bronze medal at the USRowing Youth National Championships with the Everett Rowing Club. McMenamin will not be the first Beaver in her family; her father, Brian, graduated from OSU in 1979. She felt that OSU was a good fit during a campus visit last fall.
“When I came for my visit, I loved the girls on the team and the feel of the campus,” said McMenamin, who plans to study pre-nursing in the College of Health and Human Sciences.
Powell, a teammate of Fischer’s at Everett Rowing Association, rowed in the 1st Varsity 8 in the fall, winning the Head of the Lake Regatta. After recovering from a nagging injury this winter, earned a spot in the Everett four that won a silver medals at Northwest Regionals.
Before graduating high school in 2005, Kossowsky earned silver and bronze medals at the German national championships and the Baltic Cup Regatta. Kossowsky also has a sister, Ninett, who graduates this year from Ohio State, who rows for the Buckeyes. She was named 2006 Big Ten Rower of the Year and a 1st Team All-American.
“I really had a good time on my visit to OSU and the campus was so nice,” said Kossowsky, who is interested in business administration and sports science.
Stackpole’s rowing career began in the tenth grade, when she trained primarily in sculling boats. With a background in cross country and downhill skiing, she is no stranger to training for endurance and strength. Stackpole has raced in the single, four, and eight at the Brentwood Regatta in British Columbia and the Northwest Junior Regional Championships and recently earned a silver medal in the JV single and also raced a quad at the 2006 Northwest Junior Regional Championships.
