Women's Soccer Announces Schedule - Oregon State University Athletics

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State women’s soccer team released its 2006 schedule today, and it is highlighted by visits to Corvallis from the 2005 national champion (Portland on Sept. 15) and the national runner-up (UCLA on Nov. 5).

“I think this is a very good schedule for us,” OSU Coach Steve Fennah said. “We play a lot of highly competitive teams. We start with a tough road trip to face two good teams at a neutral venue. We have some good home games, including the defending national champions. We have a tricky road trip to the East Coast to face three solid teams. The Pac-10 will be as good as ever.”

OSU opens the non-conference season with a pair of tough tests, as the Beavers go to Washington State’s Cougar Classic Tournament on Aug. 25-27 to take on a pair of 2005 NCAA Tournament teams, Gonzaga and UNLV.

The Beavers host a pair of four-team events at Lorenz Field on Sept. 1-3 and Sept. 8-10. In the first, the OSU Nike Invitational, the Beavers will face Northern Colorado and UAB (Cal State Northridge is the fourth team). In the second, the OSU Soccer Classic, the Beavers will meet Iona and New Hampshire (Oregon is the fourth team).

Portland, which was taken to overtime last year by the Beavers before prevailing, went 24-0-2 in 2005 en route to the national championship. The Pilots visit Corvallis on Sept. 15. The Beavers then make a three-game road trip to the East Coast to face St. John’s, Long Island and Army. OSU plays its final non-conference game at home against Portland State on Oct. 1.

In Pacific-10 Conference play, OSU hosts the Washington schools on Oct. 13-15 and the Los Angeles schools on Nov. 3-5. The Beavers must travel to the Arizona schools (Oct. 6-8), Oregon (Oct. 20) and the Northern California schools (Oct. 27-29). Arizona, California, Stanford, USC and UCLA made the NCAA Tournament last year.

The 2005 Beavers ended the season with a 10-8-1 overall record and placed eighth in the Pac-10 with a 3-5-1 mark. Unfortunately, they probably fell a game short of making the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. Soccer Buzz listed the Beavers as one of the “near misses.”
