Canham, Buck Gain Pac-10 Honors For The Week

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State’s Mitch Canham and Dallas Buck have been named the Pacific-10 Baseball Player of the Week and Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for May 16-22. Canham, a sophomore catcher, and Buck, a junior righthander, received the honors for their contributions to OSU’s sweep at Washington State over the weekend, assuring the Beavers at least a tie for a second straight Pac-10 championship.
Canham (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) batted .538 (7-for-13) with one home run, one double, 10 RBI, four runs scored and was 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts at WSU. In the series opener, OSU and WSU were tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning, when Canham launched a two-run home run to right-centerfield. Canham’s homer started a 10-run inning for the Beavers, who went on to outscore Washington State 39-6 in the series. Canham also threw out the only Cougar baserunner who attempted to steal during the weekend and played errorless defense. For the week, Canham had an .846 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base average.
Buck (Newberg, Ore./Newberg HS) threw a three-hitter on Friday against a Washington State team that went into the series with a Pac-10-leading .323 team batting average. Buck walked one and struck out six in pitching his first complete game of the season and the second of his career. Buck needed just 102 pitches and was aided by the Beaver infield turning four double plays behind him. He improved to 10-2 on the season, giving him back-to-back seasons with double-digit wins. Bucks 10 wins tie him for ninth on OSUs all-time list of single-season leaders, and his 25-7 career record ties him for sixth place on OSUs all-time list of career wins leaders.
The Player of the Week honor is the first of Canham’s career, while it is the 51st such honor for Oregon State. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the third for Buck, his first this season, and the 58th selection all-time for the Beavers.
