Four Oregon State Rowers Receive Scholar Athlete Awards

OSU rowers , , and were named 2006 National Scholar Athletes announced the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Monday. Oregon State’s four selections are more than any other school in the West Region.

The award recognizes student-athletes with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher that competed in at least 75 percent of her team’s 2006 spring races. Also, the student-athletes selected must be upperclassmen (2nd, 3rd, or 4th year) in terms of eligibility.

Seniors Parker and Tomlinson received the award for the second year in a row while Pleven, a senior, and Towne), a sophomore are receiving the award for the first time.

All four of OSU’s honorees are fixtures in the Varsity Eight in 2006 with Parker riding as the coxswain, Towne rowing the 7-seat, Pleven the 5-seat, and Tomlinson in the bow seat.

Parker, from Sidney, B.C., is a Exercise and Sport Science major with aspirations of becoming a physical therapist.

Pleven, from Victoria, B.C., studies Food Science and Technology and is contemplating a career as a Quality Analysis Technician.

Tomlinson, also from Victoria, B.C., is majoring in Health Promotion and Education.

Towne, from Myrtle Point, Ore., is a General Science major and is considering a career as a physician’s assistant.

A total of 135 student-athletes from 50 schools were honored for their efforts during the 2006 season.

The West Region produced 23 selections, while the Mid-Atlantic Region produced the most honorees with 44 amongst 16 different schools. South Florida led all schools with six National Scholar Athletes.
