OSU Men's Crew Takes Third at Pac-10s - Oregon State University Athletics

The No. 18th ranked Oregon State men’s crew finished third at the Pacific 10 Championships at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif on Sunday, May 14. Only California and Washington finished ahead of OSU in team points. Cal and UW are ranked second and seventh respectively.

The First Varsity Eight got out on the right foot to qualify for the Grand Final by coming in second in their heat with a time of 6:06.20. After the first 500 meters OSU was in second place and never relinquished that position through the rest of the race. Oregon State came in second behind California. The Grand Final race was an excellent race. OSU came in fourth place behind three of the nations elite. California (5:39.4), Stanford (ranked third nationally) and Washington went one, two, three to edge the Beavers out of a medal.

The Second Varsity Eight finished fourth in their race behind the big three with a time of 6:05.7. Through the first 1000 meters OSU raced very tight with Cal, UW and Stanford. Cal and UW began pulling away through the third leg of the race with OSU and Stanford left to battle it out. Oregon State gave Stanford all they wanted and more, but Stanford ended up with the upper hand.

In the Frosh/Novice race Oregon State represented very well in what was a very impressive race. Cal slipped by UW by just two tenths of a second with OSU taking third place with a time of 6:07.9. The three crews stayed in there finishing positions at each of 500 meter marks.

A fifth place finish was the result for OSU Varsity Four boat. Oregon State (6:54.3) started slow falling to sixth place to start things off then continued to remain in that position for the next 1500 meters. In the final leg of the race, the OSU crew finally got things going and moved up to fifth place, and missed fourth place by less than a second. Cal was the victor in the race with a time of 6:28.1.

“I was really pleased with how we competed today,” head coach Fred Honebein said. “We really rowed well today. The varsity eight cut around six seconds off of their time from the last time they raced Washington. We just hit the water and hung close all day. The JV really went after it aggressively today too. They really competed hard, and were ahead for a little while in the final. I was proud of the guys. We were very solid across the board today.”
