Seventh Inning Dooms No. 5 OSU In Baseball Series Opener

The Beavers took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning and ASU put a runner at third base with two out; OSU righthander Dallas Buck issued a walk to leave runners at the corners and the Beavers brought in lefthander Joe Paterson. Paterson hit Colin Curtis to load the bases and then walked Eric Sogard to force in the tying run, then saw a pair of groundballs get through the right side for a two-run single by Ike Davis and a run-scoring single by J.J. Sferra to put ASU up 5-2.
OSU turned to righthander Mark Grbavac and the Sun Devils strung together a run-scoring wild pitch, a run-scoring single by J.J. Sferra, a run-scoring double by Preston Paramore and a run-scoring single by Seth Dhaenens to put the game out of reach.
OSU had scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 2-1 lead. In the fifth, Bill Rowe poked an opposite-field triple to left with one out, then scored on Tyler Graham’s two-out single up the middle to tie the game; in the sixth, it was Barney drawing a one-out walk and scoring on Cole Gillespie’s double to right-center.
Buck had faced the minimum number of hitters through 3 1/3 innings, then
OSU managed its final run in the top of the eighth innin when John Wallace dunked a double into leftfield, then scored on Gillespie’s two-out single to right.
ASU senior rigthhander Tony Barnette, making just his third start of the season, got the win to improve to 4-1. In seven innings, Barnette allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out 10.
Buck’s record fell to 9-2, and over the past two seasons he’s 21-3. Gillespie was 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs batted in, while Graham playing for the first time since April 28, was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
