The Oregon State men’s crew competed exceptionally well this weekend in Madison, Wisc. The first varsity eight defeated Dartmouth Sunday, Apr. 30 by more than nine seconds. In Saturday’s competition, the Beavers fell just short of eighth ranked Boston University by a mere three seconds. The Beavers started slow in the Boston race but a valiant comeback in the last three 500 meter legs.
The much improved men’s crew was facing fast, but tough water conditions that included high winds all weekend. The Beavers persevered through the conditions and made a strong showing in the regatta.
This weekend was great for us,” head coach Fred Honebein said. “It was really good to see our guys have a good showing. Dartmouth is always tough so it was great for our guys to crank that one out. And the Boston race was one of the most exciting races I’ve seen in a long time. They ate us up in the first 500 meters but the guys never lost their composure and came back strong. Their moves were very effective, and just had a real good race. This was the first time this crew had raced together, so it’s nice to see we are putting things together before Pac-10s.”
