OSU's Baseball Win Streaks Ends At Seven In 12-Inning Loss to Portland

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State’s winning streak ended at seven games as the No. 6-ranked Beavers lost to Portland 20-13 in 12 innings in non-conference baseball Tuesday evening at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Pilots, who had lost six straight entering the game, scored seven runs in the top of the 12th inning to end a game that took 5 hours, 9 minutes and had eight lead changes.

OSU (28-10 overall, 9-3 Pacific-10) continues an eight-game homestand when the Beavers play host to Cal Poly on Thursday at 5 p.m. The game can be heard live on KEJO-AM (1240) in the Corvallis area, via tape delay at 6 p.m. on KUIK-AM (1360) in the Portland area and live audio and video is available via subscription on the internet at .

Against Portland (13-27, 2-10 West Coast), the Beavers lost for just the second time in 17 home games this season and for just the third time in their last 19 games overall; until Tuesday, OSU had been 25-0 in games in which it lead after eight innings. In addition to the 33 runs, the teams combined for 34 hits and 13 errors; Portland had 22 of the hits and OSU had nine of the errors.

Still, OSU had a number of chances to win the game in the late innings. The Beavers led by a run going into the top of the ninth inning, then had the bases loaded with one out in the 10th inning and with two out in the 11th inning but couldn’t push across the winning run.

Portland then scored its seven runs in the 12th on six hits, a pair of walks and one error. The Pilots got run-scoring singles from Andrew Wrisley and Paul Crowder, a two-run triple from Sean Nicol and an run-scoring double by Gustaf Little in the inning against OSU relievers Eddie Kunz and Jon Koller.

Oregon State had a 12-11 advantage going into the top of the ninth and Kunz retired the first two hitters, but Portland rallied to score twice on a walk, a passed ball, a pair of singles and a pair of errors to take a 13-12 lead. The Beavers evened the game with one out in the bottom of the ninth when Mitch Canham drove a full-count pitch from Austin Dirkx off the scoreboard beyond right-centerfield for his sixth home run of the season.

OSU had jumped in front 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning, then Portland put up five runs in the top of the third to lead 5-3. The Beavers responded with four runs in the fourth for a 7-5 advantage, but the Pilots struck for a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh to make it 11-7; Matthew Peters had two-run homers in the sixth and seventh innings for the Pilots and finished with six runs batted in for the game.

Oregon State rallied for three runs in the seventh to get within 11-10, then Shea McFeely’s run-scoring single and Bill Rowe’s sacrifice fly gave the Beavers a 12-11 lead heading into the ninth inning.

Cole Gillespie finished 3-for-5 with a triple and three runs batted in for Oregon State, while Mike Lissman was 2-for-4 and McFeely was 2-for-5. Kunz – who had won in relief on Sunday at California – took the loss to fall to 3-1 this season, going 2 1/3 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out three.

For Portland, Danny Meier was 4-for-6 and scored four runs, Nicol was 4-for-8 with a double, a triple and three RBIs, Peters was 3-for-7 with the two homers, six RBIs and four runs; Wrisley was 3-for-5 with a double and Crowder was 3-for-6. Joe Jones earned the pitching win, tossing the final three innings and not allowing a run or hit while walking three and striking out one as he improved to 1-2 this season.
