Varsity Eight Advances to Semifinals at IRAs
June 2, 2005
CAMDEN, N.J. - Oregon State's Men's Varsity Eight rowed one of its best races of the year when it counted the most Thursday morning at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships. The Beavers efforts on the Cooper River at Camden, N.J. garnered a second place finish in their heat, trailing only Harvard.
The Beavers got out to a quick start leading heavily favored Harvard through 700 meters. As expected Harvard put together a push shortly after to move up and pulled away. The Beavers, meanwhile, rowed a strong race holding off Cornell by one-second and beating favored Brown by five-seconds.
"The varsity boat rowed a spectacular race," said Head Coach Fred Honebein. "We wanted to make sure that we qualified for the semifinals and we definitely went out there and accomplished that."
The Varsity Crew has the rest of the day off, before racing Friday in the second semifinal.
OSU's Second Varsity Eight and the Freshman Eight didn't fare as well in their heats Thursday morning finishing fourth and fifth in their heats respectively.
In its second race of the day the Second Varsity boat finished third in the first repechage falling to Penn and Boston U. The third place finish puts the Beavers in the Third Level Final, which races Saturday at 9:06 a.m. EST.
The Beavers' novices raced for a second time in the Rep 3 finishing third to Virginia and Georgetown landing them in Friday's fourth semifinal at 1:24 p.m. EST.
