Women's Soccer Performs Community Service
May 23, 2005
Corvallis, Ore. - The Oregon State University women's soccer team took the opportunity to give back to the community Wednesday evening (May 18) when they hosted an American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO -- http://soccer.org) clinic in the Truax Indoor Center on the OSU campus. AYSO is a nationwide non-profit organization.
This was the third clinic in an eight-week period.
"We've had over 200 kids participate," Oregon State head coach Steve Fennah said. "It really is an enjoyable time of the year for the program, I think the kids, and I know our student-athletes and coaches enjoy the time we have to work with these youngsters."
The evening was broken down into different parts including working through skills and drill activities, and finished up with games.
"Basically it's just a little coaching session run by our team and our staff," Fennah said.
All 16 of OSU's intercollegiate programs perform a variety of community service projects throughout the year. The community service ranges from youth camps, to visiting local elementary and middle schools, to Special Olympics.
"It's important to give something back to the community," junior defender Jen Crump said. "We want to show our support and care for the people in this community."
The Beaver women's soccer program will be hosting several top caliber camps this summer on the OSU campus. For more information see the camp brochure links on this page.
The program is under the direction of Steve Fennah, who will be guiding the team for the eighth year this fall. The former Jesuit High School head coach led the team to its best conference record in the history of the program last season. Fennah is assisted by former four-year Canadian team member Heidi Slaymaker and former University of Portland and Canadian Olympic Team member Linus Rhode.
