Mike Hass Scores Twice in Spring Scrimmage

Portland, Ore. - The 2005 Oregon State University spring football practice session came to an end Saturday in front of 6,708 at PGE Park in Portland. Due to a shortage of offensive linemen, head coach Mike Riley elected to play the offense against the defense rather than play a true game.
The offense generated 34 points all through the air or via placekicker Alexis Serna's leg. Senior All-America candidate receiver Mike Hass scored two touchdowns, one on a 53-yard pass from junior quarterback Matt Moore and the other on the final score of the scrimmage, a 65-yard pass from true-freshman quarterback Sean Canfield.
Senior receiver Marcel Love scored the first touchdown of the scrimmage as he snuck behind the secondary and was on the receiving end of a 61-yard strike from sophomore quarterback Ryan Gunderson.
"The quarterbacks made some good plays today, but they also had some plays they'd like to take back," Beaver head coach Mike Riley said. "We need to eliminate those mistakes."
Three of the signal callers threw for in excess of 100 yards, led by Canfield's 167 yards on a 7-for-16 performance. Gunderson was 7 of 14 for 142 yards and Moore was 4 of 11 for 132 yards.
Moore, senior receiver Josh Hawkins and sophomore receiver Sammie Stroughter provided the day's most entertaining play. Moore found Stroughter deep in the defensive's secondary and while being tackled Stroughter proceeded to lateral the ball to Hawkins who carried it 19 yards to complete a 61-yard play.
The Beaver defense managed two scores, both on interceptions returns. Sophomore linebacker Andy Darkins intercepted Moore and returned 40 yards for a score, and redshirt freshman cornerback Keenan Lewis returned a Canfield pass 85 yards for a touchdown.
The defense limited the Beaver rushing attack to 28 yards on 39 carries and had six sacks. Overall, the offense generated 593 yards in the 106-play scrimmage.
"We saw typical Oregon State football on defense; a lot of speed and pressure on the quarterback." Riley said. "There wasn't much there on the ground today, I just hope that's because we're good against the run."
The Beavers will begin practicing for the 2005 season in early August (tba). The season opener is Sept. 3 against the Portland State Vikings at new-look Reser Stadium.
