April 29, 2005
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State Department of Athletics celebrated National Student-Athlete Day by honoring the student in student-athletes with an awards ceremony at Valley Football Center Thursday evening.
"These student-athletes should be commended for the ability to juggle and to balance their athletic endeavors and excellence with their academic endeavors and excellence," said Bob De Carolis, Oregon State's Director of Athletics. "It is a tough balancing act and we appreciate your efforts at Oregon State."
The group of honorees was comprised of sophomores, juniors and seniors who have earned at least 45 credits at OSU and have a GPA of 3.00 or greater at Oregon State. The student-athlete population at Oregon State at the end of Winter term was 471, with 348 being sophomores, juniors or seniors.
Of those 348 student-athletes, 134 (39%) were honored for their outstanding achievement in the classrooms.
Broken down by class, student-athletes performed as follows:
The sophomore class includes 128 student-athletes, of which, 45 received recognition (35%).
The junior class includes 103 student-athletes, of which, 33 earned at least a 3.00 GPA (32%).
The senior class includes 117 student-athletes with 56 reaching the milestone (47%).
National Student-Athlete Day was established in 1997 by the National Consortium for Academics & Sports and by Northeastern University's Sport Society. The occasion is co-sponsored by the NCAA. Since 1997 over two million college and high school student athletes have been honored. To receive recognition the student-athlete had to have a 3.00 accumulative GPA and be active in community service. Oregon State raised the standard by also requiring the individual to also have earned a minimum of 45 credits at OSU.
Forty-two seniors were announced as Senior Awards winners. Student-athletes who competed at least two years at Oregon State and are graduating during the year of 2005 with at least a 3.00 GPA received the award.
