No. 13 Beavers in California for a second straight day
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - Oregon State was in California for a second straight day for the Windermere Crew Classic today. The Beavers, who lost to No. 2 California and beat No. 12 Wisconsin yesterday, were set to race No. 17 Michigan today.
The Varsity Eight got out to a fast start, pulling ahead by over four-seconds in the first 500-meters. As the race progressed to the middle 1,000-meters, Michigan cut the lead to one-second. However, the effort by the Wolverines wasn't enough as the Beavers pulled away in the final 500m to win by more than three-seconds.
"I feel very good about this weekend," said Oregon State head coach Fred Honebein. "All in all, I am happy about all the races because they were against good competition and the guys seemed to step up."
Getting out to good starts seems to be a common occurrence for the Oregon State crew. Against a tough California crew, the Beavers were less than a second behind after the first 500-meters; against Wisconsin, OSU got off to a great start with better than a two-second lead in the initial 500; then, today they claimed the four-second lead in the first 500.
"The way these guys race is getting out fast," said Honebein. "They don't really plan on doing that, it just comes naturally to them and that's what makes it fun."
The JV Eight beat Sacramento State today by more than a half-minute, which capped a solid weekend for them as well. Yesterday, the JV8 lost to Cal by 10-seconds but came back later in the day to beat UC Davis by 14-seconds.
The Novice Eight rowed past Stanford by 22-seconds today. Saturday, the novice 8 fell to California by 23-seconds and beat UC Davis by nine-seconds.
"This was a good test for us this weekend, but we really need to just improve our base speed," said Honebein of what the crew needs to work on for the next race.
The Beavers are off next weekend, before rowing against Pac-10 opponents Stanford and UCLA April 22.
