Oregon State reaches the midway point of its 2005 baseball season this weekend, and so far life has been pretty good for the Beavers.
OSU (21-4 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) is off to its best start in over 30 years and the Beavers have been in all 4 national rankings for a month. Oregon State is currently on a four-game win streak and has also had win streaks of eight games and five games.
And now OSU gets to start all over again.
After sweeping a quick two-game series from Brigham Young earlier this week, the Beavers greet California (20-9, 3-0) for the start of Pacific-10 play. The teams will meet Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field; all three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and ww.osubeavers.com.
The Beavers have positioned themselves for a run at the postseason, but now have to start from zero in the win column in perhaps the nation's toughest baseball conference.
"At this point, we've been anxious for conference to start and now we find out what we're going to be made of," OSU head coach Pat Casey said.
The Beavers begin the Pac-10 season with votes worth 27th place in the USA Today/ESPN national coaches poll, ranked 18th by Baseball America magazine, 27th by Collegiate Baseball newspaper and 17th by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
OSU's 21-4 record is the Beavers' best through 25 games since 1962, when Oregon State opened the season 23-2. Grinding out the pair wins over Brigham Young - a team that had won six straight games and 14 of its last 15 - in some foul weather wasn't a bad way to finish the bulk of the non-conference schedule.
"To win two games was a big plus for us, because it keeps that momentum going and takes us into conference with some confidence," Casey said. "We couldn't really afford to lose another game to weather. We've played 25 non-conference games and we've got 21 wins; I think as a club, we're excited about that but we also know what we've got to do to get it done in conference."
Jonah Nickerson pitched the win in the first game against BYU, not allowing an earned run in five innings. That sends the Beavers into their Pac-10 opener with both sophomore righthanders in their starting rotation sporting 5-0 records and earned run averages under 1.00. Dallas Buck leads the Pac-10 in ERA at 0.77 and Jonah Nickerson is second at 0.90; Nickerson is the leader in opponents' batting average at .160 and Buck is second at .174.
The weekend also features a matchup of the two leaders in the Pacific-10 batting race. Cal's Brennan Boesch moved into the lead with a .430 mark through last weekend's games, while OSU's Jacoby Ellsbury is close behind at .426. The Beavers' Andy Jenkins is third at .413.
Ellsbury also leads the Pac-10 with 13 stolen bases.
California began Pac-10 play last weekend, sweeping Washington State by scores of 13-2, 11-4 and 5-4. After beating Sacramento State 7-5 on Tuesday, the Golden Bears are on a four-game winning streak.
Oregon State is likely to face senior righthander Eric Dworkis (3-3 record, 3.15 earned run average) on Friday and junior righthander Adam Gold (4-2, 5.40) on Saturday, with Cal's starter for Sunday to be announced. At the plate, the Golden Bears have been led by sophomore outfielder Boesch (.430 batting average, 6 home runs, 23 runs batted in), freshman infielder Josh Satin (.374, 2, 22) and freshman infielder Mike Van Winden (.347, 1, 20).

Oregon State went into its March 24-25 series against Dallas Baptist with a team earned run average of 2.30. After giving up 17 runs - all earned - in a series-opening loss, that figure went up to 3.02. The next day, the Beavers didn't allow an earned run in sweeping a doubleheader and the number dropped back to 2.75 ... Chris Campos had hits in 5 straight at-bats against Pepperdine and Winthrop on March 12-13, including 3 doubles ... the Beavers had just 5 homers through their first 14 games, then hit 3 in a 9-4 loss to Pepperdine on March 12 ... Oregon State's 2005 home-opener, a 6-4 win over Portland on Feb. 15, was the earliest in the Beavers' 96 seasons of baseball. Previously, the earliest a game had been played at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field had been on Feb. 22, 1995, when OSU beat Western Oregon 4-3. OSU's 12-6 win over ninth-ranked Arizona State on Feb. 6 was the Beavers' first win over the Sun Devils at ASU's Packard Stadium since 2000 ... On March 24, Oregon State's winning streak ended at 5 games as Dallas Baptist took a 17-7 win over the 23rd-ranked Beavers. OSU gave up season-highs in runs and hits (21) as Dallas Baptist won its eighth straight game. Sophomore righthander Jake McCormick, making his first career start, pitched a scoreless first inning but couldn't get through the second, giving up 4 runs on 3 hits and 3 walks. Oregon State had squandered a chance at taking the lead in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases with none out. Andy Jenkins then lined out to second base and Chris Campos was doubled off first on the play, and Mitch Canham flied out to rightfield to end the inning. The Patriots added 1 run in the third inning and 2 more in the fourth for a 7-0 lead. Oregon State's chance to make a game of it came in the bottom of the fifth, as the inning began with consecutive singles by Darwin Barney, Ryan Gipson and Jacoby Ellsbury; Tyler Graham then hit into a fielder's choice to plate OSU's first run and leave runners at the corners with one out. The Beavers pulled off a double steal with Gipson scoring and Graham taking second, then Graham advancing to third on an error on the play. Chris Campos came to the plate; after the count reached two balls, two strikes, the game was halted due to rain. After a delay of 36 minutes, Campos popped out to second base and Jenkins flied out to left to end the inning with the score still 7-2. Dallas Baptist got those runs back on Jeremy Goldschmeding's 2-out, 2-run double to leftfield to make it 9-2. The Patriots then scored 7 runs in the top of the seventh, including a 3-run pinch-hit homer by Sean Burgess, for a 16-2 lead. OSU's Lonnie Lechelt made his first career hit a homer as the freshman infielder hit a two-run shot to left in the Beavers' 3-run eighth inning. Oregon State's Jacoby Ellsbury went 3-for-3.
On March 25, Jacoby Ellsbury was 4-for-7 with 2 home runs, 2 doubles, 6 runs batted in and 2 stolen bases for Oregon State as the 23rd-ranked Beavers swept Dallas Baptist 7-2 and 11-3. Dallas Buck pitched a 4-hitter and struck out 12 in the opener for OSU, which did not allow an earned run in the doubleheader. OSU's sweep ended an eight-game winning streak for Dallas Baptist. DBU righthander Rodney Brantley kept the Beavers scoreless for the first 3 innings, but OSU loaded the bases with one out and then broke through on Darwin Barney's run-scoring single to center. Reliever Brice Wells walked Ryan Gipson to force in another run, then Ellsbury drove a full-count pitch over the rightfield fence for OSU's first grand slam of the season and a 6-0 lead. Buck turned in the first complete game of his OSU career and his dozen strikeouts were a new career high, eclipsing the 10 that he fanned in a win over Sacramento State last weekend. He walked just 1 and was nicked for unearned runs in the fourth and eighth innings. Buck's performance was also OSU's first complete game this season. Andy Jenkins was the only Beaver with more than one hit in the opener, going 2-for-3 with a double. In the second game, the Beavers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Dallas Baptist righthander Tyler Rowland. Ellsbury led off with a double and Tyler Graham, Jenkins and Mitch Canham all had run-scoring singles in the inning. OSU expanded its advantage to 7-0 in the second inning as Ellsbury hit a solo homer to right and Jenkins and Shea McFeely had run-scoring singles. The Patriots got within 7-3 in the top of the third when a 2-out error opened the door for Drew Holder's 3-run homer. That was all DBU would get against Maxwell and relievers Nate Fogle and Kevin Gunderson, who combined on a 5hitter. Maxwell ran his record to 4-0 this season with 6.0 innings of work, allowing 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3, then Fogle threw 2.0 perfect innings of relief and Gunderson retired the Patriots in order in the ninth. Jenkins was 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs during the second game. Ellsbury was 3-for-4 with the homer and 2 doubles in the second game, Geoff Wagner was 2-for-3 with a double, McFeely was 2-for-4 and Graham was 2-for-5.
On March 28, Oregon State's game against Brigham Young was suspended due to rain with OSU leading 5-1 in the middle of the fifth inning. The start of the game was delayed 39 minutes by rain, there was a stiff wind blowing from the southwest and persistent sprinkles dampened the final few innings of action. By the time the game was suspended at 7:28 p.m., the Beavers had used a 3-run fourth inning to widen their lead before 248 hardy fans. The frame started with Darwin Barney's infield single, then he was sacrificed to second by Mike Lissman; a pair of errors on the play allowed Lissman to reach second and Barney to take third. Ryan Gipson's double to center scored Barney and sent Lissman to third, then Jacoby Ellsbury was hit by pitch to load the bases. Brigham Young then brought on Anthony Bingham to relieve Mitch Woolf, and Bingham got Tyler Graham to bounce into a fielder's choice that nailed Lissman at the plate. Andy Jenkins' flyout to right wasn't deep enough to bring home a run, but with 2 out Geoff Wagner got an infield single to drive in one run and Shea McFeely drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-1.
On March 29, Oregon State finished a series sweep of Brigham Young, completing a 12-5 win that had been suspended due to rain the previous night and then taking an 11-6 victory in the finale. Scott Nelson's pinch-hit grand slam punctuated the win in the opener, then freshmen boosted the Beavers in the second game as Daniel Turpen pitched his first collegiate win, Lonnie Lechelt homered and Darwin Barney was 3-for-5 with 1 double and 3 RBIs. he Beavers picked up a pair of foul-weather wins over a team that came into the series with a six-game winning streak and 14 wins in its last 15 games. The teams played through damp conditions the previous night, but heavy overnight rains gave way to occasional showers and there were no delays. Oregon State bumped its lead in the suspended game to 10-1 with a 5-run sixth inning that included Nelson's grand slam. Sophomore righthander Jonah Nickerson improved to 5-0 with the win after pitching the 5. 0 innings played Monday night. Nickerson allowed 1 unearned run on 5 hits and 0 walks while striking out 8. BYU did get back within 10-5 with a 4-run eighth inning. Barney was 2-for-4 and Jenkins was 2-for-6 with a double for the Beavers in the first game of the series. In the finale, Brigham Young took its first lead of the series when Sean McNaughton led off with a homer against Turpen, a righthander making his second start and just his third appearance of the season. The Cougars then loaded the bases with a hit, a walk and a 2-out error but Turpen fanned Brandon Relf to end the inning with the score still 1-0. OSU's Jacoby Ellsbury then led off the bottom of the first with a homer to right-center to tie the score, and Oregon State led 3-1 after one inning as Barney and Joey Ledesma added two-out, run-scoring singles. The Beavers rapped 16 hits in the second game, with Shea McFeely going 3-for-4 and driving in a pair of runs, Ellsbury going 3-for-6 and driving in two runs, Ledesma going 2-for-3 and driving in two runs, and Jenkins going 2-for-6 with a double.
ELLSBURY, BUCK NOTED BY BASEBALL AMERICA: Oregon State junior outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury (Madras, Ore./Madras HS) and sophomore righthander Dallas Buck (Newberg, Ore./Newberg HS) were named to Baseball America magazine's Preseason All-America team.
Ellsbury was named to the Preseason All-America third team, and he was also named to the magazine's Gold Glove team. Baseball America ranked him as the nation's 23rd-best junior and the Pacific-10's sixth-best prospect for 2005 draft. BA also rated Ellsbury as the Pac-10's fastest runner and best defensive outfielder. Last fall, Ellsbury was named the Cape Cod League's 17th-best pro prospect by Baseball America after batting .245, 1 homer, 3 triples, 2 doubles, 7 RBIs, 12-for-15 stolen bases.
Buck was named to the Preseason All-America second team and rated the nation's fourth-best sophomore by Baseball America. The magazine listed him as the Pac-10's top prospect for 2006 draft. Last fall, BA named Buck to its Summer All-America team for his Cape Cod League season - a 4-1 record, 0.77 ERA, 58 innings, 26 hits, 20 walks, and 65 strikeouts. He was also named league's third-best pro prospect by BA.
BEAVERS WITH PAC-10 WEEKLY HONORS: Oregon State sophomore lefthander Anton Maxwell was named the Pacific-10 Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 14-20. In an 8-0 win over California-Davis on Feb. 19, Maxwell walked the first hitter of the game and then retired 21 straight Aggies, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning. He earned the win for 7.1 innings, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 8.

RAIN ON THE ROAD: If the recent trend continues, Oregon State will have better weather luck at home than it does on the road. Since the start of the 1997 season, the Beavers have had 44 games cancelled or rescheduled due to rain. Of those, only 15 have been games at OSU's Goss Stadium at Coleman Field; 20 were at ballparks in California, Nevada, Hawai'i, Texas or Florida. Another 9 were at ballparks elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest. OSU has lost just 3 home games to rain during that time, while having 16 games cancelled at sites outside the region and 3 called off at other parks in the region. The Beavers have rescheduled 12 home games, 4 games at sites outside the region and 6 at other parks in the region.
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH Pat Casey: Pat Casey, now in his 11th season at OSU, earned his 300th win with the Beavers when Oregon State beat California-Davis 8-0 on Feb. 19 at the San Diego Tournament. Casey has a record of 316-229-4 with the Beavers for a winning percentage of .579.
Of the 19 head coaches in OSU baseball history, only a pair of men who spent more than 2 decades guiding the Beavers - Ralph Coleman (1923-28, 1930-31, 1938-66) and Jack Riley (1973-94) - have coached more wins for the Beavers.
Casey's career record of 487-342-5, which includes 7 years at George Fox in Newberg, is good for a winning percentage of .587.
Casey was named the Pacific-10 Northern Division Coach of the Year in 1997 after leading the Beavers to a 38-12-1 mark, a school record for wins in a regular season. During Casey's time at OSU, 19 Beavers have been drafted by Major League Baseball teams and 4 more players have signed as free agents.
Casey came to OSU from his alma mater, George Fox, after leading the Bruins to a 171-113-1 record and winning 3 NAIA District 2 titles at the school in Newberg, Ore.
OREGON STATE'S ALL-TIME RECORD: Oregon State's all-time record in varsity baseball is now 1,799-1,242-15, a winning percentage of .591. OSU's all-time record in conference games is now 787-591, a winning percentage of .571. To break the numbers down a step further, since starting varsity baseball in 1907, the Beavers have scored 20,037 runs and allowed 15,520 runs. That's an average score of 6.56-5.08.
GOSS STADIUM AT COLEMAN FIELD: Oregon State has been playing on the same site since starting varsity baseball in 1907, making Goss Stadium at Coleman Field the oldest diamond in the Pacific-10 and one of the oldest in the country. The ballpark's first game saw Salem High beat the Beavers 4-0 on April 12, 1907.
Now in their 96th season at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, the Beavers are 929-412-1 all-time at home for a winning percentage of .693. OSU is 10-2 at home this season and averaging 578 fans per home date. In 2004, the Beavers were 9-11 at home and averaged 1,142 fans per home date.
Oregon State's ballpark made its initial venture into night baseball in 2002 with the addition of its first-ever set of lights. The first night game saw OSU beat fourth-ranked Stanford 4-1 on April 27.
Goss Stadium was added to Coleman Field over the winter of 1998-99. The ballpark holds 2,000 fans, with the main grandstand seating 1,500 of those. The structure includes a press box, concession/lobby area, dugouts, locker rooms, restrooms and storage areas.
The playing surface has been completely rebuilt recently, with the infield undergoing renovation in 1996 and the outfield in 1998.
OREGON STATE BASEBALL TICKETS: Season tickets for Oregon State's 2005 home baseball games are now on sale by calling 1-800-GO BEAVS or visiting the OSU athletic ticket office in Gill Coliseum.
A season ticket guarantees a fan the same theater-type seat for all remaining home games in 2005. Full-season tickets for are priced at $100, with a reduced rate for OSU faculty and staff members of $80 and a reduced rate for those age 62 and over of $80.
A Pac-10 Package is also offered in 2005, guaranteeing a fan the same theater-type seat for all 12 Pacific-10 home games for $50.
The Family Plan provides general admission seating for all 25 home games at a rate of $20 per adult and $10 per child. To participate in the Family Plan, you must purchase at least one adult ticket and at least one child ticket.
All single-game tickets for OSU baseball are sold on a general admission basis, and they priced at $6 for adults and $4 for students through high school and seniors age 62 and over. OSU students are admitted free with their student identification card.
Local Bi-Mart stores have 2-for-1 coupons available, allowing fans to buy 2 general admission tickets for the price of 1. There are also special rates for groups and high school teams; for more information on those prices, call the OSU athletic ticket office at 1-800-GO BEAVS.
OREGON STATE DUGOUT CLUB: The Oregon State Dugout Club is an organization devoted to supporting Beaver Baseball. The group is open to the general public and dues are $30 per season. Also, anyone entering the OSU Dugout Club Golf Tournament automatically gains membership. This year's tournament will be held June 27 at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis. OREGON STATE RADIO BROADCASTS: Oregon State baseball will again be broadcast this season, with most of the Beavers' 2005 schedule heard in the mid-Willamette Valley on KEJO-AM (1240) and via the internet at www.osubeavers.com. There is a charge for listening via the internet; the cost is $4.95 per month for all OSU broadcasts that are on the internet. Mike Parker, the voice of the Beavers, handles play-by-play with assistance from John Warren and Kip Carlson. This weekend, all three games against California can be heard on both KEJO and the internet.
TELEVISION BRINGS OUT BEST IN BEAVERS: Oregon State is awaiting word on any telecasts for 2005. Since 1998, Oregon State had played on national cable television 6 times and and the Beavers have gone 3-2 in those games, including a 3-1 mark at home. Since Fox Sports Net (formerly Prime Sports) began televising games in 1990, Oregon State has a 29-16 record in televised games, including 8-4 in national TV games.
