Fireworks Displays Discontinued at Football Games

Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State University football fans will no longer hear the explosion of fireworks following touchdowns, after a decision by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to discontinue the practice because of concern for its neighbors.
OSU athletic director Bob De Carolis announced the decision on Thursday, saying "it is the right thing to do."
"We have heard the concerns and we are responding in the most appropriate way," De Carolis said. "There are many ways to celebrate success on the field and we will find a less intrusive way. We are mindful of the close proximity of our athletic venues to residential neighborhoods and we want to maintain good relations with our neighbors."
Fireworks and other explosive devices were used during a groundbreaking ceremony for the stadium expansion last Saturday, disrupting a concurrent Pet Day celebration nearby. De Carolis said the aftermath of that incident clinched the decision that the department had been considering for some time.
"We have heard from pet owners, neighbors and military veterans expressing concern over the fireworks," De Carolis said. "Though many fans like the celebratory effect, I am confident we can find another way to express elation over our success.
"And I hope we will have a lot to celebrate this fall. We intend to make a lot of noise on the football field."
