Pennell Awarded Postgraduate Scholarship

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State wrestler Jed Pennell is one of just 174 student-athletes from across the country in 2003-04 who has been awarded a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Pennell (Cave Junction, Ore./Illinois Valley HS), a senior, will receive one of the $7,500 grants to help him pursue his postgraduate studies.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and must have performed with distinction as a member of their varsity team. According to the NCAA, the student-athlete also "must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics" and must be planning on continuing their academic work beyond a bachelor's degree.
Pennell has a 3.8 GPA while majoring in Exercise and Sport Science and earned Pacific-10 Conference all-academic honors four times, including three times as a first-team selection. He was the Pac-10 runner-up at 174 pounds this past season and at 184 pounds as a junior; he finished his career ranked among the Beavers' all-time top 50 in both career wins and career pins. Pennell's other activities include volunteering at OSU's English Language Institute and working with the university's Big Brothers/Big Sisters program.
