OSU Names Fenk Interim SID
March 2, 2004
CORVALLIS-Steve Fenk, assistant sports information director at Oregon State University for the past 14 years, has been appointed as interim Sports Information Director for the school, it was announced Tuesday by Director of Athletics Bob De Carolis.
Fenk, 40, replaces Hal Cowan who is retiring from OSU on March 31 after serving 28 years as the Beavers' Sports Information Director.
"Steve has done an outstanding job the past 14 years as one of Hal's assistants and we are fortunate to be able to elevate him to interim Sports Information Director and not interrupt the continuity of our SID office," said De Carolis.
Fenk is a native of Tillamook and a 1987 graduate of Oregon State University. Fenk served as a student assistant under Cowan as an undergraduate. Following his graduation from OSU, Fenk served as a public relations intern from 1987-88 with the Pacific-10 Conference. During that same time span, he also worked part-time for the Golden State Warriors of the NBA.
After spending one year as an intern for the Pac-10, Fenk was named Sports Information Director at Montana State University. He spent two years as the Montana State SID before joining the Oregon State sports information staff in September 1990.
Fenk's primary sports information assignment since joining the staff in 1990 has been men's basketball.
He is a 1982 graduate of Tillamook High School where he lettered in basketball and golf.
Fenk becomes only the sixth person in history to serve as Sports Information Director at Oregon State. The first Beaver SID was Art Taaffe (1924-37). He was followed by Bud Forrester (1937-41), Irwin Harris (1942-51), John Eggers (1952-79) and Cowan (1976-2004).
