Beavers top 197 for second week in a row: Oregon State scored a season-high 197.175 for the second consecutive meet when it faced then-No. 9 Stanford (197.850) last week. Despite the loss, the Beavers had several positive performances. OSU set a school record of 49.700 on floor and did not count a score lower than 9.925. Chrissy Lamun, Chelsea Plourde and Tanya Ricioli-Hebron tied for first with 9.95 scores. Plourde also scored a first-place 9.95 on beam to lead the Beavers to season-high 49.375 on the event. Heidi Goehring had a career-high 9.95 to tie for first on bars, and Ricioli-Hebron scored a 9.85 to lead the Beaver vaulters.
Despite loss, OSU moves up three spots in rankings: How does a team lose a competition but move up three spots from 16th to 13 in the national rankings? In gymnastics, wins and losses aren't as important as the scores, because that's how the rankings are calculated. So, even though the Beavers lost to Stanford, OSU's score of 197.175 tied its season high, allowing the Beavers to improve their ranking. Rankings are based on Regional Qualifying Scores (RQS), which determine how teams are seeded for NCAA Regional Championships. The RQS is factored by taking a team's (or individual's) top three scores from away meets and the team's three other highest scores (can be home or away). Of those six, the high score is dropped and the remaining five are averaged to obtain the RQS. Oregon State currently has an RQS of 196.485, which ranks 13th nationally.
OSU vs. the Salbasgeon field: Oregon State has a winning record against all five teams it will face in Friday's Salbasgeon Suites Invitational. The Beavers are 7-0 against Michigan State, including a 195.825-191.800 win in East Lansing last year. OSU defeated both Boise State and Sacramento State in a quadrangular meet at Washington last year, bringing OSU's all-time records to 22-1 against BSU and 4-0 against Sacramento State. OSU is 19-5 against BYU, although the Cougars won last year's dual meet in Provo. The Beavers are 26-3 against Seattle Pacific.
A look at the Salbasgeon field: Brigham Young jumped to No. 14 in the latest rankings after setting a school record with a 197.550 in a win at Texas Women's University last week. The Cougars are ranked third in the nation on floor, led by Kari Lords, who ranks 13th on the event. Lords also ranks fifth on beam... No. 23 Michigan State set a school record with a 196.775 against Ohio State and West Virginia last week, and the Spartans have placed first in their last three meets. Sarah Alexander ranks 19th nationally on floor... Boise State posted the secord-best score in school history with a 196.925 in a win over Denver on Sunday night, with Lindsay Ward setting a school record 39.625 in the all-around... Sacramento State scored a 193.125 in a loss to San Jose State last week... Seattle Pacific, ranked No. 2 at the USA Gymnastics level, scored a season-high 192.175 in a loss at Cal State-Fullerton last week, where they defeated UC-Davis to place second in the three-way meet.
Plourde ranks 10th in the all-around: Chelsea Plourde ranks 10th in the nation as an all-arounder. The freshman is averaging 39.384 in eight all-around appearances and has been OSU's top finisher in seven meets. She's had a high score of 39.525 - an OSU record for a freshman - twice this year. She's also ranked 15th on beam, with two 9.95s on the event.
That sounds like a broken record: OSU's floor score of 49.700 against Stanford last week broke the school record of 49.625 set at the 2002 NCAA Regional Championships. The Beavers didn't count a score lower than 9.925 last week. Chrissy Lamun, Chelsea Plourde, and Tanya Ricioli-Hebron all scored 9.95s to tie for first. The 9.95 was a season-high for all three. It also tied a career-high for Ricioli-Hebron and was a new personal best for Plourde. Angela Morales tied her career-high with a 9.925, and Th?r?se Videan set a new career-high with a 9.925. OSU didn't count a season-high 9.85 from Heather Justus. The performance moved OSU up to 17th in the national rankings on floor.
Season-high moves beam team up to No. 7: OSU's beam team scored a season-high 49.375 against Stanford last week to jump to No. 7 in the national rankings after ranking 10th last week. Chelsea Plourde had her second 9.95 of the year to lead the Beavers against the Cardinal, and Elaine Yoder had a season-high 9.875. Angela Morales tied her career-high of 9.85, and Heidi Goehring and Chrissy Lamun also had 9.85 scores.
Bars team ranked ninth: Oregon State's bars team is ranked ninth in the country, and the Beavers are averaging 49.270 - the best of any of the four events. OSU has scored 49.100 or higher in the last seven meets, including 49.275 last week against Stanford. The Beavers had a season-high 49.500 against Washington, just missing the school record by .025. Five gymnasts have scored a 9.90 or higher this season. Heidi Goehring had a career-high 9.95 against Stanford for the highest score by any OSU gymnast this year, and she had a 9.90 in another meet. Tanya Ricioli-Hebron and Chrissy Lamun have highs of 9.925, and Chelsea Plourde and Annie Campbell have scored 9.90s.
Plourde joins elite group, starts another: When Chelsea Plourde scored a 9.95 on floor last week against Stanford, she set a career-high on the event and became the fourth Beaver to score a 9.90 on all four events at least once in her career (Tanya Ricioli-Hebron became the third just one week prior when she had a 9.90 on vault at UCLA). Plourde became the first Beaver to accomplish the feat as a freshman. She has highs of 9.95 on beam and floor and 9.90 on vault and bars. Ricioli-Hebron, a senior, first reached the 9.90 mark on beam and floor as a freshman in 2000 and earned her first 9.90 on bars as a sophomore in 2002. Her previous career-high on vault was a 9.875 set her freshman year. Fellow seniors Annie Campbell and Lindsay Nelson are the other two gymnasts who have at least one 9.90 on every event; both were juniors when they reached the milestone.
Ricioli-Hebron going for record: Tanya Ricioli-Hebron has scored 39-plus in the all-around in five of the seven meets this season, moving her closer to Chari Knight's school record of 23 career all-around performances with scores of 39 or higher. After her 39.00 against Stanford last week, Ricioli-Hebron has 21 scores of 39 or higher, ranking second to Knight on the all-time list. Knight, who competed from 1991-1994, also holds the school record for a single-meet score with a 39.750 in 1993. Another senior all-arounder, Annie Campbell, entered the year also chasing that record, but a knee injury has since sidelined her. Campbell has scored a 39-plus in 16 meets during her career, but she's missed the last five meets because of the injury.
Road to NCAA Championships goes through Corvallis: For the fourth time in six years, the road to the NCAA Championships will go through Corvallis, as Oregon State will host an NCAA Regional Championship meet for the 13th time (OSU last hosted in 2002). This year's regional competition is set for April 3. Six teams will compete at each of the six regional sites, with the top two teams at each regional advancing to the NCAA Champiomships, to be held at UCLA from April 15-17. Oregon State has made it to nationals the last two times the Beavers hosted a regional competition (2000 and 2002; OSU also went to nationals in 2001, when it competed at UCLA for regionals).
OSU's depth gets tested this season: The Beavers, who have already lost three gymnasts to season-ending injuries, have put their depth to another test in recent weeks. Annie Campbell, an all-arounder in the first three meets, had arthroscopic knee surgery five weeks ago and has missed the last five meets. Her status will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. Out for the season are Lindsay Nelson, an all-arounder last season, Daylee Ingalls, a vault/beam competitor last year, and Meghan Jones, a vault/bars performer last season. Ingalls and Nelson are out with knee injuries. Jones suffered life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car in September and is rehabbing in her hometown of Medford, Ore.
Head coach Tanya Chaplin: Head coach Tanya Chaplin is in her seventh season as head gymnastics coach at OSU. She enters this week's meet with a 59-44-1 record for regular season action and is 101-79-1 including postseason competition. Chaplin has guided the Beavers to three trips to the NCAA Championships and was named OSU's Female Coach of the Year in 2000 and 2001. In 1999, she was named Pacific-10 Coach of the Year. Formerly Tanya Service, she was a six-time All-American and held six school records while competing for UCLA from 1986-89.
Gymnast Notes
Annie Campbell: Annie has missed the last five meets after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery five weeks ago. Her status will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis. Prior to the knee injury, Annie had competed as an all-arounder in three meets. After opening the year with all-around scores of 38.650 and 38.875 in the first two meets, Campbell returned to top form against Washington, scoring a 39.350 with 9.90s in three events. She tied her career-high of 9.90 on bars (she had a 9.90 once in 2002) and added 9.90 marks on beam and floor as well. She had a 9.65 on vault against the Huskies. The three 9.90s were her first of the season; prior to the meet with Washington, her top scores were a 9.85 on floor and a 9.825 on beam, both at the Super Six Challenge. Her top bars score was a 9.775 against Cal State-Fullerton. She had a 9.65 on vault in all three meeets. Annie missed all of last season to rehab from an Achilles injury suffered the week prior to the 2002 NCAA Championships.
Heidi Goehring: Heidi won her first individual event title when she scored a career-high 9.95 on bars to tie for first against Stanford last week. She has now scored 9.80 or better on her last seven bar routines. She had a then-career-high 9.90 against Washington, and she's scored 9.875 in two other meets. Goehring also has replaced Campbell in the beam lineup at the last five meets, and she has scored 9.825 or better in the last four. She had a career-high 9.875 at UCLA, and she had a 9.85 against Stanford last week. Prior to this season, her career-high was a 9.80 set at the 2002 NCAA Championships - where she also filled in for Campbell, who was injured just prior to that meet as well.
Heather Justus: Heather, who had competed only on vault in the first three meets, also has been in the lineups on bars and floor the last five weeks as a result of Campbell's absence. After falling on bars at Cal in her first official appearance on that event, Justus has hit her last five routines, highlighted by a personal best 9.85 at UCLA. She's scored 9.825 or better on her last three floor routines, including a season-high 9.85 last week. She's had a season-high 9.80 on vault twice, at UCLA and against Arizona.
Chrissy Lamun: Chrissy, normally a regular on three events, has competed all-around at the last five meets after joining the vault lineup while filling in for Campbell. She's finished with 39-plus scores three times, including a personal best 39.250 last week against Stanford, when she had a season-high 9.95 on floor to go along with a 9.85 on beam, 9.825 on bars and 9.625 on vault. Chrissy's best event overall this year has been bars, leading the team with a 9.856 average. She had a career-high 9.925 at UCLA after tying her previous best of 9.90 against Arizona the week before. She's also scored three 9.875s on the event this year. Chrissy has scored 9.90 or higher three times on floor, with her season-high of 9.95 last week. She had a season-high 9.925 on beam vs. Arizona and has scored 9.825 or better six times, including the last five meets. On vault, she had a career-high 9.70 against Arizona. Chrissy has won four individual titles this year, with two on floor and one each on bars and beam. In all, she has scored a 9.80 or higher 17 times this year, seven times on bars, six on beam and four on floor. Chrissy is the reigning Pac-10 co-champion on floor, scoring a 10.0 at last year's Pac-10 Championships.
Angela Morales: Angela had one of her best meets of the season against Stanford last week, tying personal bests on two of her three events. She matched her career-high of 9.925 on floor for the second week in a row and tied her personal best of 9.85 on beam. She added a 9.75 on vault. She's had a 9.825 or better on floor at the last six meets, and has scored 9.90 or higher in the last three. She won the event with a 9.90 against Arizona for her first individual win of the year. The 9.85 on beam was her first score above 9.80 on the event this season; prior to last week, she'd had a season-high of 9.775 twice. She's scored 9.85 or better on vault four times, with a season-high 9.875 against Arizona.
Chelsea Plourde: The freshman is having an outstanding rookie season. She has been OSU's top all-arounder in seven of the eight meets and ranks 10th in the nation as an all-arounder. She's averaging 39.384, with a career-best 39.525 twice - against Stanford and Arizona - to set an OSU freshman record (breaking Chari Knight's mark of 39.500 in 1991). She has personal bests of 9.95 on beam and floor and 9.90 on vault and bars, making her the first OSU freshman ever to score 9.90 or better on all four events at least once. Plourde has the team's top averages on vault (9.831), beam (9.875) and floor (9.828), and she's second on bars (9.85). In addition to ranking among the nation's top all-arounders, she's tied for 15th on beam. Plourde has already won 12 individual titles, with four all-around wins, three vault and beam victories, and one win on apiece on bars and floor. She's scored 9.90 or higher eight times, and 28 of the 32 routines she's competed have earned scores of 9.80 or better (seven apiece on each of the four events).
Tanya Ricioli-Hebron: The All-American has competed all-around in all eight meets this year, with a season-high 39.525 at UCLA. She's scored 39.00 or higher in six meets, moving her closer to Chari Knight's school record of 23 career 39-plus performances. Ricioli-Hebron enters this week's meet with 21 such performances. The senior has won six individual titles this year, most recently tying her career-high of 9.95 on floor last week to claim of share of first place. In all, she's won three titles on floor and three on bars. She's scored a 9.90 on her last three bar routines and tied her career-high of 9.925 against Washington. She's scored 9.90 or higher five times on floor and had a career-high 9.90 on vault at UCLA to make her the third Beaver to score a 9.90 on all four events at least once in career (although her season-high on beam is 9.875, she's scored as high as 9.95 on that event). She has a total of 11 scores of 9.90 or higher and 22 scores of 9.80 or higher this season. With her 39.525 all-around score at UCLA, she became just the second Beaver to score 39.500 or higher three times in a career (she had a 39.525 and a 39.575 last season).
Th?r?se Videan: Th?r?se had a career-high 9.925 on floor against Stanford to help the team set a school record on the event. The score bettered her previous career-high of 9.90 set in 2002 and improved her previous season-high of 9.85 set at UCLA the week before the Stanford meet. She's scored 9.80 or better on the event five times this season. Videan is the lead-off performer on bars, and she's gotten the team off to a good start in all eight meets, with six scores of 9.80 or better. She had a season-high 9.875 against Cal State-Fullerton and is averaging 9.806 on the event. Videan has also vaulted in every meet, with a season-high of 9.80 at Arizona State.

She had a season-high 9.875 against Stanford last week for the team's second-best score in that meet, and she had a then-season-high 9.85 at UCLA the previous week. Prior to the 9.85 at UCLA, she'd had a season-best 9.775 three times.
