Honolulu, HI - Chip Cannon doubled with the bases loaded and drove-in three runs in the ninth to lead The Citadel in a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over No. 25 Oregon State in game one of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament Tuesday afternoon in Murakami Stadium.
Oregon State(8-2) used an early RBI-single by Andy Jenkins to take a 1-0 lead after one inning. Jacob Ellsbury led off the game with a single to right. Ellsbury, who advanced into scoring position on a balk by Citadel starter Chip Cannon, scored on the Jenkins single.
The Beavers added two runs in the third to push their advantage to 3-0. Ellsbury, who led off the inning with a single for the second time in the game, scored on an infield single by Jenkins. Jenkins then came around to score from first as Shea McFeely doubled to right-center field. McFeely was thrown out at third trying to stretch the double into a triple.
The Citadel (3-4) answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third on two hits and a passed ball. Andy Phillips started the rally with an infield single and scampered home from first on Jon Aughey's double over the leftfielder's head. After stealing third, Aughey raced home on a Beaver passed ball to cut the OSU lead to 3-2.
The Bulldogs tied the score at 3-3 with one run in the fourth. Citadel shortstop Matt Matulia reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a Beaver throwing error. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Matulia scored on a RBI-single by catcher Will Coker, who connected for a base hit to center.
In the top of the seventh OSU jumped ahead 5-3 with two runs on two hits and a HBP. Aaron Mathews led off the seventh frame with a ground rule double that bounded over the right field fence. Mathews later scored on a squeeze bunt by Chris Kunda to break the 3-3 tie. After reaching on a hit-by-pitch, Ellsbury scored on a base hit to right by outfield defensive replacement Tyler Graham that gave the Beavers a two-run lead.
Down 5-3 in the eighth, The Citadel cut the OSU lead to one, 5-4, as Chip Cannon scored from third on Matulia's run-scoring single to right. Cannon, who reached on a HBP to start the inning, advanced to second on the Beavers' second HBP of the inning and then moved to third on a fielder's choice off the bat of pinch hitter Blaine Richardson. With runners on first and second, Coker grounded into a double play to squelch the Bulldog rally.
The Beavers tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth to take a 6-4 lead as Mathews trotted home on a Jenkins' bases loaded HBP. After plunking Mathews, Bulldog closer Shannon Sprouse got McFeely to groundout to second with the bases loaded to end the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Chip Cannon ripped a double into the left-centerfield with the bases loaded to put the Bulldogs on top 7-6. Trailing 6-4, Matt Covington and Jon Aughey reached on back-to-back hits, while Josh Stackley reached on an error by the Beavers. With one out, Cannon gave the Dogs their third win of the season with the game-winning double.
Shannon Sprouse (1-0) earned the win after pitching the ninth, while OSU's Dallas Buck (0-1) took the loss after surrendering the Cannon double in the ninth.
