WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - -
Oregon State athletes Dustin Janz of football, Katie Beachwood of women's crew, Nathan Pakish of men's crew and Gina Schmidt of volleyball have been awarded postgraduate scholarships by the Pacific-10 Conference, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday.
Each student-athlete, selected by their respective institution, will receive a grant for $3,000. In all, 42 students from the conference's 10 schools were awarded scholarships.
To be eligible for a Pac-10 postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.00 or better, be in his or her final season of eligibility, have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team, intend to continue academic work beyond a baccalaureate degree as a full-time graduate student, and have behaved both on and off the field in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution, and intercollegiate athletics.
Janz was a four-year letterwinner at center on the football squad. Beachwood rowed in the varsity four boat which placed second at the Pac-10 Championships this spring, while Pakish rowed the five-seat in the junior varsity eight that placed seventh nationally at the IRA Championships. Schmidt, an All-Pacific-10 Team member, led the volleyball team to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 18 years this past season.
