When Oregon State goes after the Pacific-10 wrestling championship this weekend, the Beavers should feel right at home in their try for the title - they'll be wrestling in OSU's Gill Coliseum.
The Pacific-10 Conference Championships return to Corvallis for the first time since 1995 this weekend, with sessions on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. both days. Oregon State (12-8 overall, 7-2 Pacific-10) is considered a contender for the title, but the Beavers will need a strong effort to unseat defending champion No. 13 Arizona State.
"This weekend is what it's all about," OSU coach Joe Wells said. "You spent all that time over the summer and fall and winter working toward being a conference champion or making it to nationals, and now it's here. Our guys are excited to wrestle in this meet, and excited to be able to wrestle it at home in front of their friends and families."
There are six Beavers in the final Pacific-10 rankings of the regular season. Rated first at 174 pounds is defending champion Nathan Coy, second are 184-pounder Isaac Weber, 197-pounder Jason Lovell and heavyweight Jason Cooley, and third are 133-pounder Nathan Navarro and 141-pounder Casey Horn. The official seeding and bracketing for the tournament will be done Friday afternoon.
The top four finishers in each weight class qualify for the NCAA Championships. They'll be joined be three other wild-card entrants who will be selected by the Pac-10 coaches at the conclusion of the meet Sunday night.
"You don't want to wait around to have somebody decide your fate," Wells said. "All 10 of the guys we put on the mat are capable of placing in the top four, and most of them have goals that are a lot higher than that. Now they've got to go out and prove how good they are at crunch time."
Coy, ranked 12th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News, won the title last season with a pin of Cal Poly's Steve Strange in the finals, Strange also returns for this year's meet. The OSU senior is trying to become the first Beaver to win back-to-back conference titles since Oscar Wood won at 142 pounds in 1998 and 149 pounds in 1999.
"Nathan is starting to round into postseason form," Wells said. "He's got to get in there right from the start and be aggressive. If he does that, he has a great chance to repeat."
Cooley, a senior ranked seventh nationally, was the Pac-10 champion in 2000 and placed second last season, losing to Arizona State's Kellan Fluckiger in the finals by an 8-5 score. He's trying to become the first Beaver heavyweight to win two conference titles since Reynold Gardner in 1994 and 1995.
"Jason has been wrestling much better than he did all of last season," Wells said. "He was disappointed to lose that title last season, and he's put himself in good position to win it back. He's got to force the action against some bigger guys, use his quickness and technique, and he'll have a terrific shot at it."
For the Beavers to make a run at Arizona State in the team race, they'll have to come up with maximum scoring from wrestlers at all 10 weights.
"ASU is a very, very talented team," Wells said. "And you've got Oregon, Boise State, Cal Poly, us - any of those teams could get on a roll and really make things interesting.
"What we have to do is go out with intensity from the start of every one of our matches and take the fight to that other guy. We want to keep the pressure on for seven minutes and see what happens. If we do that, get some pins and a lot of other bonus points (for technical falls and major decisions) along the way, we can win this thing."

PACIFIC-10 MEET TICKETS: The 2002 Pacific-10 Conference Wrestling Championships will be held March 2-3 at Oregon State's Gill Coliseum. Tickets will be sold through the OSU Athletic Ticket Office. Tickets for adults are $25 for a tournament pass or $7 per session, for seniors and students, tickets are $21 for a tournament pass or $6 per session.
PACIFIC-10 MEET RESULTS: Results from the 2002 Pacific-10 Championships will be available on the Oregon State athletics website at www.osubeavers.com and they will updated after each round during the tournament's four sessions. Updated brackets will be posted as a PDF file after each session.
PACIFIC-10 MEET DATES CHANGED: The dates for the 2002 Pacific-10 Wrestling Championships at Gill Coliseum were moved up to Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3 at the request of the conference.
When the meet was originally scheduled, OSU was to have hosted a women's basketball game on March 2. However, when the Pac-10 basketball tournaments were put in place, that sport's schedule was moved up a week and Gill Coliseum became available on both weekend dates.
To allow more fans to see both days of the tournament without having conflicts with the work week, the tournament was moved to March 2-3.
ALL-TIME IN CONFERENCE MEETS: Oregon State has won 45 team conference championships, starting with the 1909 Northwest Conference title, the most recent was the 1994 Pacific-10 championship. Last season, the Beavers placed third behind Arizona State and Boise State.
Oregon State has won 196 individual conference titles, starting with Charles Sitton's win at 175 pounds in the 1909 Northwest Conference meet. Two of those titles came last season, when the Beavers' Eric Jorgensen placed first at 157 pounds and was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler and Nathan Coy won the title at 174 pounds.
The last time the Pacific-10 Championships were held in Corvallis was 1995, when the Beavers placed second. OSU had 4 individual champions that year: Glenn Nieradka at 126 pounds, Babak Mohammadi at 134 pounds, Les Gutches at 177 pounds and Reynold Gardner at heavyweight.
The last time Oregon State won a Pacific-10 team title in Corvallis was in 1984. That was the second straight year the Beavers had won a Pac-10 title in Gill Coliseum, having also managed it in 1983.
OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells, now in his 10th season as Oregon State's head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and 4 top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships.
The Beavers' 25-10 win over then-No. 11 Boise State last season was Wells' 100th dual meet win at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the 1992-93 season, Wells is 115-69-1 for a winning percentage of .624.
The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference's Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships 4 times in Wells' tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in 1998.
Under Wells, OSU has had 2 national champions, 15 All-Americans and 16 conference champions.
Wells was named the ASICS Oregon Wrestling Classic's Man of the Year for 1998 for his contributions to wrestling in the state.
Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a 2-time placer at the Big Ten meet and the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State.
OREGON STATE SECOND IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers are second in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools and fourth in all-time dual meet winning percentage going into the 2001-02 season. OSU currently has an all-time dual meet record of 849-261-24 and a .759 winning percentage.
OREGON STATE'S DUAL MEET SCHEDULE: OSU faced one of the nation's toughest dual meet schedules. The Beavers met 6 teams ranked in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll of Feb. 20: No. 1 Minnesota, No. 2 Michigan, No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 11 Illinois, No. 13 Arizona State and No. 20 Fresno State.
OREGON STATE IN GILL COLISEUM: Oregon State has one of the finest homes in college wrestling, 10,400-seat Gill Coliseum. Now in their 46th season in Gill Coliseum, the Beavers have a home dual meet record of 352-65-5 in the arena for a winning percentage of .839. This season, OSU was 6-3 at home and averaged 836 fans per home date.
OSU moved its home wrestling meets into Gill Coliseum in 1956-57, when Dale Thomas became head coach. Since then, the arena has hosted conference championship meets 13 times and it was the site of the NCAA Championships in 1961 and 1980. Gill Coliseum will be the site of the 2002 Pacific-10 Conference Championships.
BOWLBY EARNS USA WRESTLING BELT FOR 2001: Oregon State heavyweight Andy Bowlby was the winner of the USA Wrestling's 2001 Championship Belt Series for University-level wrestlers. Bowlby, an OSU junior from Newberg, Ore., won both the freestyle and Greco-Roman titles at the University National Championships and also earned a silver medal in freestyle at the Pan American Championships.
USA Wrestling's University National Championships cover the freestyle and Greco-Roman styles, while the NCAA Championships are for collegiate, or "folkstyle" competition.
USA Wrestling is the governing body for the sport in the United States. Based on a point system, it crowns Championship Belt Series winners in each of its age-group levels: Cadet, Junior, FILA Junior World, University and Senior levels. Athletes only receive points on the specific age level where they compete, and points cannot transfer from one age level to another age level.
Bowlby claimed the University level Championship Belt Series with 163 points, defeating runner-up Jamill Kelly of Stillwater, Okla. by 40 points. University athletes are 18-24 years old and their class has graduated from high school.
The Belt Series is based upon a point system, rewarding athletes for actual success in competition. Athletes who place in the major USA Wrestling events on the regional, national and international levels scored points in the series.
BEAVER WRESTLING HOMECOMING: Oregon State held its annual Beaver Wrestling Homecoming on Dec. 12, when a crowd of 1,356 saw the Beavers beat archrival Oregon 16-16 by criteria. Oregon State welcomed back 21 former wrestlers and legendary head coach Dale Thomas. The alums on hand accounted for 26 individual conference titles, 17 All-America finishes and 7 NCAA national titles.
CRITERIA DECIDES SEASON'S FIRST CIVIL WAR: Oregon State won the season's first Civil War dual meet over Oregon on Dec. 12 as OSU heavyweight Andy Bowlby's 1-1 win over 12th-ranked Eric Webb left the final team score at 16-16. But, under a tiebreaker rule in effect for all NCAA dual meets this season, the Beavers got the team victory.
The rule had previously been in effect only for dual-meet tournaments, in which a winning team had to be decided to advance in the bracket. A set of criteria is used to break the tie, and OSU won on criteria g, which awards the victory to the team with the most near-fall points. OSU 174-pounder Nathan Coy scored the only near-fall of the meet with a 2-pointer in his 10-1 win over Shane Webster.
To end the dual, Bowlby held Webb down for the 30-second tiebreaker at heavyweight to earn what went in the books as a 1-1 win. Most of the crowd of 1,356 left the building thinking the dual had ended in a tie, but officials were thumbing through the rule books to find the list of criteria in order to declare a winner.
In order, the criteria are most victories (that night, 5 each), most 6-point wins (none), most 5-point technical falls (none), most 4-point technical falls (none), most major decisions (1 each), most decisions (4 each) and greater number of total near-fall points earned (Oregon State 2, Oregon 0).
OREGON STATE SHUTS OUT CENTRAL WASHINGTON: Oregon State recorded its first shutout of the season when it beat Central Washington 44-0 in the Oregon State Duals on Nov. 23 at Gill Coliseum. It was the Beavers' first shutout since a 45-0 win at Cal State-Fullerton late in the 2001 season.
OREGON STATE'S QUADRUPLE-HEADER: When Oregon State wrestled 4 meets at the Oregon State Duals on Nov. 23, it was the first time the Beavers had wrestled 4 duals in a day since Jan. 11, 1997 at the Virginia Duals. This year, OSU beat Portland State 36-3, Central Washington 44-0, Pacific (Ore.) 32-6 and Simon Fraser 40-9, in 1997, OSU beat Cornell 30-10, Indiana 22-13, Cornell 20-13 and lost to Arizona State 23-13.
