Allen, Weathersby Named Preseason All-Americans
April 10, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State linebacker James Allen and cornerback Dennis Weathersby have been selected to Playboy Magazine's preseason College All-America football squad, it was announced Tuesday. Allen is a senior weak linebacker from Portland and Jefferson High School. Weathersby is a junior from Duarte High School in Duarte, CA.
Allen and Weathersby are the first Oregon State selections to the Playboy preseason All-America squad since linebacker Steve Brown was selected in 1972. This year marks the 45th consecutive season that Playboy has selected a preseason College All-America squad. All told, Allen and Weathersby's selections make a total of seven Beaver players who have been selected during the 45-year time span.
Allen missed the first four games of the 2000 season with a low back injury but came on very strong at the tail end of the season and had an outstanding game in the Fiesta Bowl, leading OSU with 7 solo tackles and a tackle for loss.
Weathersby was named to the Freshman All-America team by The Sporting News and The Football News following his freshman season in 1999. He was selected first team All-Pac-10 and honorable mention All-American this past season. In addition, Dennis was also a Pacific-10 Conference All-Academic squad selection and a District VIII Verizon Academic pick in 2000.
