CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State swimmer Birte Steven and wrestler Eric Jorgensen have been named Athletes of the Week at OSU for their performances in competition during the week of March 12-18.
Steven, a freshman swimmer from Hannover, Germany, became the Beavers' first swimming All-American since Amy van Loben Sels in 1994-95. Steven earned All-America status in the 200-yard breaststroke by placing 16th at the NCAA championships on March 17 with a time of 2:15.24.
She was .01 seconds from earning All-America status in the 100 breaststroke a day earlier. Steven broke OSU records nine times during the season-five times in the 100 breaststroke, three times in the 200 breaststroke and once in the 400 individual medley. All told, she won 24 races during the season.
Jorgensen, a senior from La Grande, placed fifth at 157 pounds at the NCAA championships this past Saturday at the University of Iowa. He helped lead OSU to a tie for 18th in the team race.
Jorgensen ended his career with a 115-43 record, and he scored team bonus points for a pin, technical fall, major decision or forfeit in 42 percent of his matches (67 of 158). This season, he was 37-7 with team bonus points in 48 percent of his matches (21 of 44).
