June 7, 2000
CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Matt Imes will join the Oregon State women's crew coaching staff as an assistant coach effective July 1st. Imes served as the freshman/novice coach for the OSU men's crew for the last three years.
Imes, who guided the men's freshman eight to a fourth-place finish at the IRA National Championships this spring, will help coach the women's novice and varsity squads, as well as recruiting. He joins the staff of head coach Charlie Owen and assistant Jane LaRiviere.
"We're excited to have Matt as part of our program," OSU head coach Charlie Owen said. "We've had a chance to work with him over the past few years, and he will work well with our staff. He's shown that he can motivate athletes and create fast crews, as we saw recently at nationals."
During his tenure at OSU, his crews have finished third at the Pacific-10 Championships each year, and were 15th at the IRA National Championships in 1999.
Imes, a certified U.S. Rowing Level II Coach, has served as an assistant for both the U.S. Pan-American Team and the U.S. Nations Cup Team (Under-23 World Championships). He assisted in the training and selection processes for both camps, as well as coaching the pre-elite camp boat at the U.S. Club Nationals and Canadian Henley.
Before coming to Oregon State, Imes spent four years as the freshman men's coach at Gonzaga University, in Spokane, Wash., where his responsibilities included recruiting, development and training of the novice team, organizing travel and fundraising, and equipment management. In 1996, Imes coached the freshman boat to a fourth-place finish at the IRAs.
Imes was a Graduate Assistant at the University of Wisconsin from 1992-94, where he rowed from 1988-91. He was a member of the men's varsity four title team in 1990. Imes graduated with a bachelors degree in history.
