Two Beavers Are Drafted

CORVALLIS, Ore. - A pair of Oregon State players were selected when Major League Baseball held its first-year player draft June 5-6.
Scott Nicholson (Longview, Wash./R.A. Long HS, Lower Columbia CC), a junior righthanded pitcher, was taken in the 15th round by the Texas Rangers. Joe Gerber (Portland, Ore./Grant HS), a senior first baseman, was taken in the 27th round by the Detroit Tigers.
Nicholson had an 8-7 record and 4.72 earned run average for Oregon State this season. He pitched the Beavers to wins over third-ranked Stanford and fourth-ranked Arizona State, and earned honorable mention All-Pacific-10 honors.
Gerber batted .352 with 9 homers and a school-record 67 runs batted in this spring. He earned All-Pacific-10 honors for the second straight year and became OSU's career record holder in home runs, RBIs, doubles and total bases.
