Men's Basketball Schedule for 2000-2001 Announced.
June 1, 2000
Corvallis, Ore. -
An ambitious 30-game schedule awaits Oregon State University first year men's basketball head coach Ritchie McKay and his team for the 2000-2001 season.
McKay's first official game will be Fri., Nov. 17 when the Beavers host the Cal State-Fullerton Titans of the Big West Conference. The game will be a match-up of individuals making their first appearance at their respective schools as a head coach. Titan mentor Donny Daniels was a long-time assistant at the University of Utah, and former assistant and player at CSUF.
Oregon State plays a total of five regular season non-conference home games, including dates with Southern Colorado Nov. 20, UC Riverside Dec. 9, defending co-Big Sky Conference champion Eastern Washington Dec. 20, and defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion South Carolina State Dec. 23. UC Riverside is a new member of the Big West Conference. Exhibition home games have been scheduled for Nov. 3 with an opponent to be named, and Nov. 13 against Athletes-In-Action.
One of the most difficult road schedules in recent years awaits a team that returns seven letterwinners. The Beavers will travel to Hilo to compete in the ninth annual City Bank/Aloha Airlines Big Island Invitational, beginning Nov. 24 against Appalachian State. OSU will play either the University of San Francisco or Long Beach State in the second round, with a potential match-up with Oklahoma, Montana State, Tulane, or Hawaii-Hilo set for the final day.
The road schedule is also highlighted by an appearance in the Dec. 28 Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans, where the Beavers will play Louisiana State. Oregon State will also compete at the University of San Diego of the West Coast Conference, the University of Denver, and the University of Wyoming in a game played at Cheyenne. OSU's seven non-conference dates away from Gill Coliseum are its most since the 1984-85 team also played seven away from Ralph Miller Court.
"This schedule will certainly provide us an opportunity to play some top caliber opponents as we prepare for conference play," McKay said. "However, it is my desire to continue to improve our schedule in the future, starting with next year."
Pacific-10 Conference action begins Jan. 6 at McArthur Court in Eugene. The Beavers will play five of their first seven conference games on the road, but then enjoy the month of February with six of eight contests at Gill Coliseum. The team will conclude the regular season at home against Oregon, March 10.
