Stephanie Norman, Tony Newnan Join OSU Women's Basketball Staff

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Stephanie Osburn Norman and Tony Newnan have joined the Oregon State University women's basketball program as assistant coaches, it was announced Tuesday by Director of Athletics Mitch Barnhart.
Norman, 34, is currently an assistant athletic director and science teacher at Marist High School in Eugene and will continue teaching at the school until the conclusion of the current school year in June and then join the OSU program.
Newnan, 31, joins the OSU program immediately after serving the past 11 years as an assistant coach at UC Santa Barbara. This past season, Newnan held the title of associate head coach with the Gauchos.
"Oregon State is extremely fortunate to hire the caliber of assistants and quality of people in both Stephanie and Tony," said Beaver head coach Judy Spoelstra. "They have both done an outstanding job recruiting and coaching at their respective schools. They have a combined 20 years of college coaching experience.
"Stephanie Norman has proven here recruiting forte by signing players at Oregon who won two Pac-10 championships," said Spoelstra. "Tony Newnan, as the associate head coach at USCB, had great success orchestrating the Gauchos offensive efforts, winning a Big West championship and hosting a first round NCAA Tournament site this past season."
Norman previously served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Oregon from 1992-99. Before taking the Oregon position, Norman spent the 1991-92 season at the University of Hawaii as a graduate assistant. The Rainbows were ranked 12th in the nation in 1992 and placed second in the NWIT finals with a 25-7 record.
Stephanie is a native of Florence, Oregon. She graduated in 1984 from Siuslaw High School after earning all-state tournament honors here senior year. She became the school's first female Division I scholarship recipient when she accepted a scholarship from Arizona State University. She earned a degree in wildlife biology and completed here collegiate career in 1988, averaging 4.6 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. She also was a two-time honorable mention academic all-conference selection.
Norman started her coaching career as an undergraduate assistant coach at ASU in 1989. She then moved to the University of British Columbia in 1990 as an assistant coach, and then to Hawaii in 1991.
While serving as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Oregon for seven seasons, the Ducks appeared in six straight NCAA tournaments and won a Pac-10 championship in 1999. Oregon produced a 122-69 record during her tenure as an assistant and had three top 20 recruiting classes.
Newnan is a 1992 graduate of UC Santa Barbara. Before graduating from UCSB, Tony spent 1990-91 as a student assistant coach and was named full-time in 1991 under head coach Mark French.
During his tenure at UCSB, Newnan also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Gauchos and has earned a reputation as one of the top assistants in the country.
Spoelstra still has one spot to fill on her OSU coaching staff. Norman and Newnan replace Karen Westwater and Trisha Sears who resigned following the completion of the 1999-00 season.
