Pacific-10 Honors Nicholson
May 9, 2000
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State junior lefthander Scott Nicholson (Longview, Wash./Lower Columbia CC) was named the Pacific-10 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for May 1-7, commissioner Tom Hansen announced Monday. Nicholson tossed a five-hitter as the Beavers beat third-ranked Stanford 5-2 on Saturday.
Washington senior first baseman Ed Erickson was named the Pac-10's Player of the Week. Erickson batted .750 (6-for-8) with two homers and five runs batted in during a pair of games against Washington State.
Nicholson picked up his team-leading seventh win of the season by beating Stanford, and it was his second win this spring over a top-five team. He had thrown a seven-hitter in OSU's 11-3 victory at fourth-ranked Arizona State on April 8.
Nicholson earned his latest win despite pitching with a fever of over 100 degrees, and the victory came in front of a national cable television audience and a season-high crowd of 1,311 at OSU's Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. He allowed just two runs (both earned), and struck out two batters.
Nicholson allowed just single runs in the third and ninth innings, other than that, he did not allow a Cardinal baserunner past second base. Nicholson improves to 7-6 on the year with a 4.30 ERA and 73 strikeouts.
