Women's Golf Takes On Best Of The West At NCAA West Regional
May 8, 2000
SCHEDULE: For the seventh year in a row, the Oregon State women's golf team competes in the West Regional May 11-13 in Tempe, Ariz., as they aim to qualify for the NCAA Championships May 24-27 at Sunriver, Ore.
THE COURSE: The West Regional will be played on the par 72 Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., a course which the Beavers played Apr. 7-9 at the Arizona State/Ping Invitational. The course, located on the ASU campus, was constructed in the links fashion and is fairly wide-open, similar to OSU's home course - Trysting Tree Golf Club.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT: The 24 teams and six individuals will play 18 holes Thursday through Saturday beginning at 7:30 each morning. First-and second-round pairings are based on seedings, and final round pairings are based on results of the first two rounds. Only the top four scores from each five-person team will count toward the team score.
LAST YEAR: Oregon State played to a 14th-place finish in the 20-team field at the NCAA West Regional Tournament, which was held in Houston at the Pine Forest Country Club. Southern California scorched the par 72 course with an 879 to win by 11 strokes over Arizona. The Beavers shot 318-304-311--933 to finish eight strokes ahead of host Texas A&M. Kathleen Takaishi - since graduated - tied for 12th at 7-over 223 to pace Oregon State.
STARTERS FOR WEST REGIONAL: Rachel Borcherts (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev.) Finished 54th at last year's West Regional, shooting 83-76-76--235 ... tied for 41st at the Pac-10 Championship Apr. 24-26, shooting 236 ... averaging 77.9 strokes per round in nine tournaments ... recorded first collegiate hole-in-one on Apr. 7 in first round of ASU/Ping tournament ... tied for 13th at Peg Barnard Apr. 15-16 at 10-over-par 154 ... set career standard with final-round 71 at ASU Apr. 7-9 en route to a tie for 16th at 7-over 223 ... has four top four finishes in her career ... owns a tie for third-lowest round in OSU history with her 71 at ASU.
Stacie Ferguson (Fr., Tucson, Ariz.) Played her best golf of the season at Pac-10 Championships, finishing tied for 14th and shooting career-low 71 in second round, after which she was tied for sixth ... totaled 10-over 226 for the tournament ... played in six tournaments, averaging 78.7 strokes.
Carina Olsson (Jr., Sollentuna, Sweden) Shot 14-over 230 at Pac-10s to tie for 24th ... ranked 89th in May 3 MasterCard Poll ... tied for seventh at Peg Barnard Collegiate on Apr. 15-16 in her best finish of the season, best finish of any individual on the team ... finished tied for 16th at ASU/Ping tournament Apr. 7-9 ... also tied for 16th at Rainbow Wahine tournament in fall ... averaging 77.7 strokes in seven tournaments ... shot season low 72 at ASU ... tied for 26th at Dr. Thompson's.
Anne Brooksby (Jr., Portland, Ore.) Last year at West Regional, shot 84-73-83--240 to tie for 73rd ... tied for 53rd at Pac-10s with 242 ... averaging 78.7 strokes over team-leading 27 rounds played ... best finish tied for eighth at Rainbow Wahine Nov. 8-10 ... also fired season-low 73 at Rainbow.
Reena Eklund (Sr., Medford, Ore.) Tied for 84th at last year's NCAA West Regional with a 244 ... finished in a tie for 45th at Pac-10s with a 237 ... averaging 80.1 strokes over 21 rounds ... 80.1 is second-lowest average of her career ... season low of 76 ... best finish of 27th at Ihlanfeldt Invitational in fall.
HEAD COACH RISE LAKOWSKE ON THE REGIONAL: "I think we're in good shape. We're hitting the ball much better than we were as a group, and Anne Brooksby in particular will be a key for us." After a sub-par performance at the Pac-10s, Lakowske feels Brooksby will be ready to go. "Normally, she's one of our best players, but she's in good shape."
"We've been working on our short-game quite a bit, and we've been talking about ASU since we were just down there a month ago. I think we'll have a much better feel (for the course), since all of these girls played it a month ago."
Lakowske believes the Beavers will have an advantage over much of the field, given the fact that OSU has played the course recently and only a few of the other teams in the field were in the same tournament at ASU a month ago.
"There are really only 12 or 13 teams that have played it this year, so I think it's an advantage in that we have some extra knowledge of the greens, which are different than in years past. The men were just down there last week (at Pac-10s) and they said the greens are still fairly slow. So we know what to expect.
"We have people who have played that course a number of times, and Stacie (Ferguson), being from Tucson, has played it quite a bit as a junior golfer, so everybody has a lot of experience on that golf course."
HOW THE REGIONALS WORK: Two regional tournaments encompassing the current five districts will be conducted May 11-13 to determine the championship field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of the NCAA Championships competition, and all national championship policies will apply. A total of 252 participants have been selected for the regional competition. Championship berths are allocated as follows: 11 teams and three individuals from the East region, 11 teams and three individuals from the West region, and the two remaining team berths will be allocated to the region with the most teams ranked in the top-24.

THE COACHING STAFF: Head coach Rise Lakowske is in her 10th year as head coach of the Oregon State women's golf program. During her tenure, Lakowske has elevated the Beavers to national prominence after years of obscurity in women's golf. Under her guidance, Oregon State has reached six consecutive Western Regionals. Lakowske was named Far West District Coach of the Year in 1998 when her team tied for 10th at the NCAA West Regional and 16th in the NCAA Championships.
Lakowske played in four National Golf Championships while golfing for Oregon State from 1973-77. She won four tournaments during her career, as well as several non-collegiate events. She played professionally until 1981.
Born in Laurel, Miss., Lakowske began playing golf when she was eight years old. Now, as a coach, she is known for her rapport with her student-athletes, and impresses on her student-athletes the importance of setting team and individual goals as well as striving for success in the classroom.
Brian Watts returned to Oregon State this year after five years in private business. Watts coached at OSU as an assistant during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. After playing on the Golden State Tour, Florida State Tour and the Canadian PGA Tour for four years, he brings back tremendous experience to the OSU program. He also worked as an assistant professional at the DeBell Golf Course in Burbank, Calif., and at Golf Classics of America in Beverly Hills and San Dimas.
Watts graduated from Western Oregon University in 1989 with a bachelor of science in physical education. He also attended Oregon State.
