Men's Golf Season Comes To A Close
May 31, 2000
HIGHLIGHTS: The Oregon State men's golf team had one of its most successful seasons in 1999-2000. OSU won the Northwest Invitational, the Pacific Invitational, and the Pilot Spring Invitational this year, while totaling 12 top-10 finishes in 14 tournaments. The Beavers qualified for NCAA regional competition for the third time in four years, and were ranked as high as 24th in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings. OSU had its best finish ever at the Pacific-10 Championships when they finshed second on the strength of 11 sub-par rounds from OSU golfers, totaling a score of 19-under-par 1,421. OSU also broke or tied several school records at the Pac-10s.
Four golfers earned All-Pac-10 honors as well. Sophomore John Lepak earned Second-Team All-Pac-10, while junior Anthony Arvidson and seniors Dustin Wayne and Tim Mickelson received Honorable Mention.
Arvidson became the first OSU golfer in 12 years to win two tournaments in a season with his wins at the Oregon Duck Invitational and the Northwest Invitational. Tim Mickelson recorded the highest finish for an OSU golfer at the Pac-10 Championships with his 2nd-place effort. Senior Kyle Hudson won the Pilot Spring Invitational this year as well for OSU, giving the Beavers three individual wins this year.
HEAD COACH MIKE KETCHAM ON THE SEASON: "It was a disappointing way to end, coming up one shot short (at the NCAA West Regional). It's amazing, you hit 860-some shots during the course of a tournament, and the whole year comes down to one shot. But I don't want that to take away from the nice things that the kids did during the year. We had a good season, a lot of records were broken and we won some golf tournaments. Certainly, we have set a standard and raised the bar for the years to come. I can't call it a great year, based on the fact that we came up a little short of going to the national championships, but we've certainly made huge strides over the last couple years, and I think the program will be better because of it.
"The outlook, I think, is outstanding. We had a bunch of seniors in the lineup in the three, four, and five spots, and we have some kids that we've recruited the last couple of years who have been waiting their time to get their chance, and now they're going to get their chance."
KETCHAM ON NEXT YEAR: "We have five new kids coming in next year as well. All of them, I think, can contribute immediately. I think the team next year has a chance to improve just like this year's team did as the season went on, and hosting the NCAA Regional Championship out at Trysting Tree will certainly be in our favor. I think we have an outstanding chance to get to the national championships.
"We have an international flavor. We recruited a kid from Denmark and a kid from England. The young man from Denmark is the 15th-ranked amateur in the country of Denmark right now, and we certainly think he's going to be one of our solid players for next year. There are three or four months between now and the start of the season, and there will be some kids that will develop extremely quickly, and some kids that will come in and make an impact that you might have thought were still a year away.
"We're excited. It's going to be fun, and the opportunity these kids have been waiting on, they're going to get their chance.
KETCHAM ON THIS YEAR'S REDSHIRTS (SEAN DEACON, DAREN GRIEG, AND DAVID STYPULA): "Those guys will certainly be in the mix next year. All three of them got stronger this year, and improved their games a great deal. I think all three of them have a very strong chance of contributing next year."
SIGNEES: OSU will have five new faces on the team next year, including two players from overseas and one from Canada. Here is a look at the signees:
David Yarnes - Tucson, Ariz.
Cameron McKenzie - Vancouver, B.C.
James Salt - Cheshire, Eng.
Michael Jurgenson - Denmark
David Williams - Corvallis, Ore.

Anthony Arvidson led the Beavs with his 3-under-par 213 over the three rounds, including a final-round 68, to tie for 24th.
Arizona captured the team title with a 25-under 839, while Pepperdine's Michael Beard won the individual title with a 12-under 204.

Ketcham has put together one of the deepest teams in Oregon State history this year. His teams continue to experience success, as a result of expert teaching of the game's fundamentals, national recruiting, and effective communication.
Ketcham arrived in Corvallis after spending five years at San Jose State University. While heading up the Spartan program, the team made three appearances in the NCAA West Regionals and qualified for one NCAA Tournament. The program was ranked consistently in the top 25 during his tenure, and he was selected the Big West Conference Coach of the Year once.

He led the team to the National Junior College Athletic Association national championship both years (1993, '94) he was associated with the school. He was named the NJCAA Coach of the Year both seasons, and coachedeight NJCAA All-Americans. His teams compiled an 84-1 conference record over the two years.
Ketcham was a NJCAA All-american in 1985 at Odessa Junior College in Texas before beginning a two-year career at Arkansas. Ketcham played professionally on the U.S. Golf Tour, Asian Tour, and the Canadian Tour, in addition to going through the PGA Tour Qualifying school twice.
