Ken Simonton to Attend Leadership Conference, Calvin Carlyle Earns Fellowship Award.

Corvallis, Ore. - Oregon State junior tailback Ken Simonton is one of 353 student-athletes across the nation selected to participate in the fourth annual NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference.
The student-athletes were selected from a total of 885 nominations from NCAA member institutions that participate in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The conference will be held May 28 through June 1, 2000, at Disney's Wide World of Sports and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.
The mission of the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference is to provide a diverse group of the nation's top student-athletes an opportunity to actively participate in challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable them to become better leaders on their campuses and in their communities. As a result of participation, the student-athletes will enhance their communication skills, decision-making and problem-solving skills, critical-thinking skills, and collaborative skills. The conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.
The 2000 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will focus on topics identified during the nomination process as well as topics recommended by members of the Division I, II and III NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committees who serve as an Association-wide voice for student-athlete issues. Topics for past conferences have included developing leadership skills, changing perception, developing political skills and utilizing the student athlete committee.
The student-athletes chosen to participate will represent all NCAA divisions, 22 different sports and more than 20 countries.
CALVIN CARLYLE EARNS FELLOWSHIP AWARD
Calvin Carlyle, junior free safety from Los Angeles has been awarded a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for a summer 2000 fellowship at Oregon State University.
The fellowship was granted for doing research work. Carlyle, a liberal studies major, is the first non-science major at OSU to ever win this award. He is a two-year letterman on the football squad, as was a starter last season.
Carlyle will be sponsored by OSU professor Dr. Janine Trempy.
