Gerber, Hedges named to All-Pacific-10 team

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State senior first baseman Joe Gerber (Portland, Ore./Grant HS) and senior outfielder Drew Hedges (Portland, Ore./Beaverton HS) were named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference baseball team that was announced Monday. OSU players earning honorable mention were freshman third baseman Brian Barden (Bonita, Calif./St. Augustine HS), freshman designated hitter Andy Jarvis (Renton, Wash./Liberty HS), junior pitcher Thad Johnson (Santa Rosa, Calif./Santa Rosa JC) and junior pitcher Scott Nicholson (Longview, Wash./Lower Columbia CC).
Arizona State catcher Casey Myers was named the Player of the Year, while Southern California's Rik Currier and Stanford's Justin Wayne shared the Pitcher of the Year honors. USC's Anthony Lunetta was Newcomer of the Year and ASU's Pat Murphy was Coach of the Year.
The all-league honor was the third for Gerber, who was named to the All-Pac-10 squad last season at first base and was All-Northern Division at designated hitter in 1998. Gerber batted .352 this season with nine homers and a school-record 67 runs batted in, he set OSU's career records for home runs, runs batted in, doubles and total bases this spring.
Hedges batted .371, the sixth-best mark in the Pac-10 this season, with seven homers and 38 RBIs. It was his first all-league selection.
Barden batted .370, the seventh-best mark in the Pac-10 this season, with eight homers and 49 RBIs. Jarvis batted .339 with four homers and 32 RBIs.
Johnson, a righthander, was 5-5 with a 4.96 earned run average this spring. Nicholson, a lefthander, was 8-7 with a 4.72 earned run average.
