Women's Golf Wraps Up Another Successful Season
May 18, 2000
SUMMARY: The Oregon State women's golf team capped off a solid 2000 campaign with its seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA West Regional, but missed the cut for the NCAA Championships in Auburn, Alabama. The season saw several additions to the school's all-time team and individual scoring lists.
TEAM HIGHLIGHTS: The Beavers spent the year among the nation's top-50 teams, as they played their way to five top-10 finishes, including a fifth-place at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in November. OSU put together its best round of the year when it shot a 295 at the Arizona Invitational in February after a winter-break layoff of over three months. The 295 by the team of Anne Brooksby, Brie Del Bone, Reena Eklund, Andrea Hehn is the fourth-best score in OSU history. The women also had a sixth-place finish at the Peg Barnard Invitational in April.
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS: Senior Andrea Hehn carded her second career 69 when she torched the par 72 Randolph Park Course at the Arizona Invitational in February. Hehn's 69 was the second of her career, and she shares the honor of having the lowest score in school history with Kathleen Takaishi and Anjeanette Dabbs.
Brie Del Bone, who transferred from the University of Nevada over winter break, wasted no time in making an impact on the program as she tied the second-best round in school history. In her first tournament, she fired a 70 in the second round of the Arizona Invitational.
The 2000 season was a career year for senior Rachel Borcherts, as she posted a career-low round of 71 in the Ping/Arizona State Invitational to go along with a career-best scoring average of 77.8.
True freshman Stacie Ferguson matched Borcherts' 71 a few weeks later at the Pac-10 Championships, on her way to a tie for 14th.
Borcherts and Carina Olsson shared the low tournament scores for OSU with 223s. Both players' scores came at the Ping/ASU tournament, when they tied for 16th. Olsson had the best individual finish on the team of seventh, which was at the Peg Barnard Invitational.
WHO'S BACK: Oregon State loses Rachel Borcherts, Eklund, Anne Brooksby and Olsson will lead the Beavers as seniors next season, and Bridget Bieth, Melanie Furuta should return as well.
Ferguson came on strong at the end of the season, peaking at the Pac-10 Championships with a tie for 14th. Olsson led the team with a 77.6 average, and Brooksby averaged 79.0 for the year.
LAKOWSKE ON THE SEASON: "It wasn't a really bad season, but it wasn't a really good season. It was the kind of season that I didn't anticipate having, but sometimes they do happen. Our scoring average was probably 310, 311, or 312, which is top-50, but it's not top-20, and that's where I think this program can go. They definitely had the potential to do that this year and it just didn't happen. I don't think it was because of lack of practice or lack of participation. More people got to participate this year than any other year, and that could have been a problem, actually. I haven't had that circumstance before, and maybe not having the set five or six kids had an effect. Next year we'll probably only have about eight kids, so that will probably make a difference.
"There were highlights, but it just never came together with all the players at the same time. Andrea (Hehn) didn't finish the year because of personal reasons. Brie (Del Bone) had a couple good tournaments in the spring, then kind of fell into a little bit of a slump, but that's not going to be a problem, she's got two more years. So, definitely some good stuff happened, but it never gelled at the right moment as far as postseason play, and that's okay, but you hope it works the opposite way."
LAKOWSKE ON NEXT YEAR: "We're having our individual meetings right now and we're talking about the tournaments that they can play in the summer to get ready for next year. It's very important that the kids play a lot of summer events on their own. They need to play in the U.S. Amateur, and they need to try and qualify for the U.S. Open. The kind of athlete we need to make this program better is going to have to do those things. So we're talking about those things, we're talking about workouts and preparation. It's a little easier to focus on the game (in the summer) and get yourself ready.
"We have two kids coming in next year. Laura Skinner has been recruited, and Kelly Ferris, who just finished fourth in the Oregon State high school tournament, is a walk-on from West Albany. Both of those kids will help us out. I think Laura will help us out right away, and Kelly has got a ton of potential and is really motivated to play and wants to be here."
Ferris, from Bishop Kelly High School in Boise, Ida., won three Junior PGA Tournaments last year, including the Idaho State Junior Championships.
LAST ACTION: The Beavers finished 24th at the NCAA West Regional and did not qualify for the NCAA Championships. OSU shot a 938, with a low round of 304. The highest OSU finisher was Borcherts, with a 231. Here is a look at the team, top individual, and OSU scores from the Regional, held at the par 72 Karsten Golf Course, in Tempe, Ariz.:

THE COACHING STAFF: Rise Lakowske is in her 10th year as head coach of the Oregon State women's golf program. During her tenure, Lakowske has elevated the Beavers to national prominence after years of obscurity in women's golf. Under her guidance, Oregon State has reached six consecutive Western Regionals. Lakowske was named Far West District Coach of the Year in 1998 when her team tied for 10th at the NCAA West Regional and 16th in the NCAA Championships.
Lakowske played in four National Golf Championships while golfing for Oregon State from 1973-77. She won four tournaments during her career, as well as several non-collegiate events. She played professionally until 1981.
Born in Laurel, Miss., Lakowske began playing golf when she was eight years old. Now, as a coach, she is known for her rapport with her student-athletes, and impresses on her student-athletes the importance of setting team and individual goals as well as striving for success in the classroom.
Brian Watts returned to Oregon State this year after five years in private business. Watts coached at OSU as an assistant during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. After playing on the Golden State Tour, Florida State Tour and the Canadian PGA Tour for four years, he brings back tremendous experience to the OSU program. He also worked as an assistant professional at the DeBell Golf Course in Burbank, Calif., and at Golf Classics of America in Beverly Hills and San Dimas.
Watts graduated from Western Oregon University in 1989 with a bachelor of science in physical education. He also attended Oregon State.
